This week, our partner FODŻ dedicated a new information plaque and monument at the Klimontów Synagogue and Jewish Cemetery.
This project was spearheaded by Klimontów descendant Yechezkel Anis of Jerusalem, working with FJHP and Krzysztof Bielawski, who is a FODŻ researcher and staff member. Among the speakers at the event were Mr. Anis and Rabbi Ben Zion Reichberg of the FODŻ board.
FJHP is proud to have helped to support this effort which saw the installation of new signage in the town, including a marker identifying the Jewish cemetery, an informational signboard detailing the history of the town’s Jewish community and its cemetery, and a monument that includes the surnames of the Jewish families of Klimontów.
The Jewish presence in Klimontów dates back to about four centuries years ago, and largely ended with the German occupation of the town and ex*****on of its Jews during the Holocaust. The Jewish cemetery of Klimontów has approximately 4,500 burials; during the mid-20th century, the gravestones were pillaged by the occupying Germans and subsequently by the local population. A public school was later built on top of 2/3 of the original cemetery.
At a sacred place where memory was under assault, these cooperative efforts seek to restore memory.
