Little things can get away and become big things so fast. Late last year, we inherited the former church we used to rent for program, and its parsonage, where the site caretaker had lived for YEARS. The church itself is in great shape, which is why we were happy to rent it, and then happy to be gifted it when the congregation disbanded.

The caretaker let us know a while after that they were buying a home and moving out, but hoping their friends could move in and take over the lease without any fees. We said YES, of course, since HOUSING is in our 501c3 mission statement. However, they never moved in, and the caretaker’s family stopped answering the phone.

This weekend, in preparation for the winter storm, we visited to make sure the house was secure, as well as photograph to get it listed for a new tenant.

To say we were shocked is an understatement.
We’ve notified the county it’ll have to be torn down, and is not safe for anyone to be inside.

Ceiling and floors have holes, there is major structural instability, and places that are already caving in/waiting to give way under any weight.

There’s no way anyone from the church knew the state of the place. No one in current leadership had ever been inside, since the caretaker had lived there long before their times.

We are devastated to have to demolish this once beautiful 4 bed, 2 oversized bath, double living room, separate eat-in kitchen and dining, historic home with high ceilings and a HUGE canner’s pantry, as well as ample closets, and wide hallways. We’ll replace it properly, we promise.

Well, this is awkward!

Just before the new year, we announced a SLEW of new projects and ways you can engage with Camp, such as The Coalition for Camp, the Amateur Architects Contest, and our Zeffy giving page.
And then… the president’s dog was poisoned. It’s been a weird couple weeks, but we are ON IT and MOVING this 2026 forward ✌️

Wait, no SEMESTERS?

That’s right! COH operates on a seasonal schedule from equinox to solstice and back again. Students take up to 8 13-week courses at a time, and can stagger subjects across seasons. Knock out your maths in the summer when there’s no sports in session? Done! Hunker down into fine arts during the winter, and pick up history when there’s sunlight past 6pm again? Sure!

Everyone deserves a proper education. And to us, the Least Restrictive Environment is one where students have sovereignty over their schedules.

Things we DON’T need for Christmas 🙅‍♀️

Hello, all.
If you have perused our website recently, or at all, you will be aware that COH is on an Indefinite Hold, due to the present political and social climate of the United States rendering the operation of an organization like ours inherently dangerous to associate with.

It would put the lives of children at risk to be in the custody of leadership such as ours, with morals such as ours, pursuing goals such as ours, in the state of Texas, in the year 2024.

For the foreseeable future, COH cannot in good conscience work toward opening a residential campus which, with any sort of public awareness, would become a target for terroristic acts or attacks from those who feel emboldened by present and future-promised administration to take it upon themselves to "purify" or "simplify" our national demographics.

Camp Oak Hallows has been, is, and always will be focused on serving the most vulnerable among us. This value is not reflected by the 45/47 Administration and its supporters. In keeping the best interest of our target demographics, The Civic Academy at COH will continue as an information source and governmental activity "watch dog" with a keen eye on the opportunity for COH to return from the ashes, like the phoenix in our original logo.
