Employing Women With Felonies and Mental Health Issues To Serve The Furniture Needs Of Foster Children
Welcome! I’m Lucinda Bunn, the resident artist and designer at Wonderland Furniture, designs by lucinda and here is the story...
In the beginning… After losing my mom in 2011, I had a tough time with grief and depression. So I started painting furniture around my house in bright, cheerful colors and patterns. It was literally my occupational therapy to help me cope.
I still battle with depression at times, but (pick one) -God, The Universe, my Higher Power -has continued to inspire and enable me to paint happy furniture. (Which makes me happy.) Having painted almost every stick of wooden furniture in my house, I knew that I had to paint more. So I began painting and donating kid’s dressers to T.A.P.C.S., Tulsa Advocates for the Protection of Children, a non-profit which supports the 1,400+ children in and out of foster care due to child abuse/neglect in Tulsa County.
These kids were going from the only home they had ever known to live with strangers and a future uncertain. In many cases, their only belongings traveled with them in a trash bag. And I created something that these kids could call their own. Something special. Happy. And joyful. Over a year’s time, I painted over a dozen dressers and school desks-giant crayon boxes, VW Buses and some big kid furniture for a fundraiser in support of the agency. I refer to my furniture as my “wooden children.” They all have a name and a story. And I get to know them well.
