The Badlands Conservation Corps spent four long days connecting the Maah Daah Hey trail below mile marker 142 back to the original trail. The crew alongside US FS Trails Manager, Jeff Davis, members of the Montana Youth Conservation Corps and Maah Daah Hey Trail Association super volunteers Roger & Pat Ashley cut in nearly .25 mile of trail, cleared and brushed out this beautiful new section.

The crews continue back and brushed, lopped a clear path (follow pink survey tape, flagging) to get back to the largest Rocky Mountain Juniper Tree. Take the fork before or after mile marker 142. Around a mile round trip.

Please, contact ND Senators Hoeven & Cramer to Protect the Roadless Ruke!

Today, TU President and CEO Chris Wood joined Senator Martin Heinrich and Senator Ron Wyden on the Hill to defend the Roadless Rule.

“If you hunt and fish, roadless areas are the most valuable landscapes we have in America. One statistic that absolutely blew me away when we were developing the roadless rule: These lands represent 2 percent of the American landscape, and 25 percent of all of our threatened and endangered species find habitat in them. And don’t forget that these landscapes are high elevation landscapes, very low timber values, very expensive to get up into, often with very erosive soils,” said Wood. “Records show that a lack of roads has not stopped fire prevention measures. Lack of roads in inventoried roadless areas has neither prevented fuel treatment nor led to substantially more fire. Today, 80 percent of all fires are started by people, and 80 percent of all fires are started within a half a mile of a road. The idea that we would overturn the roadless rule, it defies economic, ecological, and common sense.”

Despite opposition from ND constituents, Senator Hoeven just voted in favor of the nullification of the Roadless Areas in North Dakota. The committee vote fell 11-9 along party lines in favor of nullification. Senator Hoeven is telling us he doesn't care about North Dakota's wild places that are home to elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep habitat and critical lambing areas. This legislation will now move to the Senate, call Senator's Hoeven and Cramer and let them know you do not support nullification of the 2001 Roadless Rule!
