Hello! So it certainly is getting hot out there. I'm going to temporarily shut down the shop because of the damage mailing can cause to the seeds. Just don't see it as responsible. I'll still be available for questions/concerns. But, please get your orders in before Sunday. I'll be back in October!

In 2018 there was 82.2 Million Tons of packaging waste in the USA (according to the EPA). Its hard to really grasp how much that is. With online commerce being such a keystone part of the economy, well its worth thinking about. Companies should make a better effort of mailing their products with repurposed, recycled, or compostable material.

Arizona Seed Seed uses responsible packaging. Made from repurposed materials.

Quite easy, if you have bubble wrapped mailers and brown paper bags at home. Anyone can make a bubble mailer of materials you'd throw out anyway.

Scarification and soaking.

Seeds want to hold out to sprout until spring, so to do that they often have a coating that needs to be worn and weathered. This keeps them through the winter.

Many seeds require this weathering and luckily it can be mimicked quite easily in your own home. You'll just want to open up the seed coat enough to let moisture in. Then soaking the seeds for at least 24 hours gives them a chance to swell up. This can cut germination time by a lot!

Depending on the toughness of the seed coat and the size of the seed may determine what tool you'll want to use. Scissors, nail clippers, a knife, and sandpaper will all work. Try not to cut too deep and damage the fragile embryo inside. Just enough to see the white underlayer [cut marks pictured]. The helium, the part of the seed that detached from the plant, is also worth avoiding.

Happy Planting!

Cold Stratification:

A thing certain seeds benefit from. It prepares them for planting in the spring. Indeed some seeds cannot germinate without this step.

Its pretty easy. You'll need:
-Vermiculate, sand, peat moss, or coconut coir
-Sharpie
-Plastic bag
-Water, distilled if you have that
-Seeds!

First: Moisten your medium (I used coconut coir). It should be moist but not sopping wet.
Second: Mix in your seeds.
Third: Place in plastic baggie and label (date and seed variety).
Fourth: Put in a safe place within your refrigerator.
Fifth: Wait. Usually 1-3 months depending on your seed type.

Some of the seeds that benefit from cold stratification include
-Milkweed
-Asters
-Rose
-Apache Plume
-Pomegranate
-Arborvitae
