This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring the women who helped shape the women behind the work. Motherhood takes many forms, and no two journeys look the same. From dinner tables to waiting rooms, from quiet sacrifices to everyday acts of love, mothers and mother figures show up in ways that hold families and communities together.

At the Women’s Foundation of Alabama, we know this work is deeply meaningful and rooted in purpose. Today, we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, bonus moms, and mother figures who mother our courage, our care, and our commitment to building a better Alabama.

Another one! The Clearing the Path conversation continued in North Alabama. 📍 Last month in Huntsville, we brought together leaders, employers, and community members to keep “Clearing the Path” moving forward, this time with a focus on listening and learning from the unique opportunities and challenges shaping the region.

Across the discussion, one theme stood out: North Alabama’s growth depends on whether women can fully participate in it. From access to affordable childcare to career pathways in high-demand industries, participants shared what is working and where systems still fall short.

These conversations are helping us better understand how economic mobility takes shape at the local level. They also reinforce that solutions are strongest when they are informed by the women and communities most impacted.

As our listening tour continues, we remain committed to turning these insights into action, working alongside partners across the state to build an Alabama where more women can thrive.

In February, West Alabama came together to Clear the Path for Alabama women. As part of our mission to take research and power-building work on the road, we gathered leaders, partners, and community members to celebrate solutions that help women thrive, because when women succeed, families, businesses, and communities succeed.

Clearing the Path Tuscaloosa highlighted research-backed solutions like childcare, paid leave, and workforce development, all aligned with our bold goal of moving 10,000 Alabama women onto the path of economic mobility.

The discussion made one thing clear: women are not a secondary part of Alabama’s workforce; they are central to it. When women and caregivers are supported, businesses see higher retention, communities gain stability, and economic growth becomes more sustainable.

Clearing the Path is about aligning our systems with that reality. In 2026, we strategically transitioned Clearing the Path to a listening tour, elevating communities across the state and centering community- and women-driven grounded in lived experiences. It provides an opportunity to listen, build partnerships, and collaboratively develop solutions that better align and strengthen systems.

The wage gap is not just a statistic—it is a reality that shapes how women live, work, and plan for their future. It shows up in everyday life through missed opportunities, added financial pressure, and hard choices for families - like choosing between paying for childcare or staying in the workforce, or taking unpaid leave to care for a loved one and falling behind financially.

March 26th marks Equal Pay Day. The annual observance highlights how far into the new year women must work to make what men earned in the previous year. This year, the date falls a day later than it did in 2025—because for the second year in a row, the gender pay gap in the U.S. has widened.

At its core, this is about dignity and the opportunity to build a future without barriers. At the Women’s Foundation of Alabama, we are working to ensure women have what they need to thrive—in the workforce, with their families, and beyond.
