📚Background
👉🏻 Saturday, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo died. Lopez-Cornejo was a Salvadoran immigrant detained at the Delaney Hall federal detention center in New Jersey.
👉🏻his death highlights the dangerous plight of immigrants held by ICE as a result of Trump’s expansive crackdown on immigration. (New York Times, Aug. 4, 2026)
👉🏻Rising death tolls raise serious concerns about medical neglect, overcrowding, and lack of access to clean drinking water. Family separations due to prolonged detentions have increased. And since Trump took office in 2025, more than 6,300 children, toddlers, and infants have been detained. Oversight of ICE is an issue of urgent priority.
👉🏻Alabama has several ICE detention centers including Baldwin County Correctional Center, Etowah County Jail, and Pickens County Detention Center.
👉🏻Alabama is ranked in the top 20 states for ICE arrests (montgomeryadviser.com Jan. 9, 2026), and ICE had detained children in over 20 Alabama cities as of January of this year. (AL.com, Jan. 22, 2026) Alabama’s immigrant enforcement policies are among the strictest in the nation,

📱Senators/Representatives
1️⃣Hi, my name is [NAME], and I'm calling from [ZIP], [STATE].
I'm calling [REP/SENATOR NAME] to express my deep concern about reports of mistreatment, neglect, and dangerous conditions at ICE detention facilities nationwide. I urge you to conduct public oversight hearings and investigations into conditions at ICE facilities.
👉🏻Most people held in immigration detention have no criminal record, including the overwhelming majority of children and families detained at facilities. Only 3% of detainees have had a violent felony conviction. I urge [REP/SENATOR NAME] to call for an end to the arrests and detention of non-criminal immigrants!
👉🏻In Alabama, 58 Alabama police agencies and sheriffs’ offices now partner with ICE, giving local officers the authority to carry out the duties of federal immigration agents. Each agency can receive substantial reimbursement benefits by signing task force contracts with ICE, providing strong incentives for collaborating with ICE. I strongly object to these partnerships, which serve to expand the detention of valuable and beloved non-citizen members of our communities.
