👉🏻 Saturday, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo died. Lopez-Cornejo was a Salvadoran immigrant detained at the Delaney Hall federal detention center in New Jersey.
👉🏻his death highlights the dangerous plight of immigrants held by ICE as a result of Trump’s expansive crackdown on immigration. (New York Times, Aug. 4, 2026)
👉🏻Rising death tolls raise serious concerns about medical neglect, overcrowding, and lack of access to clean drinking water. Family separations due to prolonged detentions have increased. And since Trump took office in 2025, more than 6,300 children, toddlers, and infants have been detained. Oversight of ICE is an issue of urgent priority.
👉🏻Alabama has several ICE detention centers including Baldwin County Correctional Center, Etowah County Jail, and Pickens County Detention Center.
👉🏻Alabama is ranked in the top 20 states for ICE arrests (montgomeryadviser.com Jan. 9, 2026), and ICE had detained children in over 20 Alabama cities as of January of this year. (AL.com, Jan. 22, 2026) Alabama’s immigrant enforcement policies are among the strictest in the nation,

I strongly object to these partnerships, which serve to expand the detention of valuable and beloved non-citizen members of our communities.

Congress let the enhanced ACA tax credits expire in December, and Alabama is paying for it: about 455,000 Alabamians buy their own insurance through the marketplace, roughly 98 percent of them with help from the credits, and premiums rose about 20 percent this year.
👉🏻 For 2027, insurers are proposing a median 14 percent increase, partly because healthier people are dropping coverage and leaving a sicker, more expensive pool behind . 👉🏻👉🏻The House passed a three-year extension in January, and a bipartisan Senate group has spent months on a compromise that includes income caps, the condition Senator Britt has raised herself; none of it has come to a vote this year.
👉🏻The calendar now forces the issue: federal review of 2027 rates ends August 7, the Senate's last scheduled day before recess, and insurers' final filings are due August 12. If the Senate acts this week, insurers still have time to adjust before those rates are locked in.
