We’re proud to recognize Grandview Medical Center nursing directors Roman Harris and Abbie Tarabella, who were recently elected to serve in leadership with the Greater Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).

Their shared vision is simple: connect, advocate, grow, and celebrate.

A Birmingham-area native, Roman hopes to expand local AACN membership, strengthen advocacy for bedside critical care nurses, and increase community outreach through nursing recognition, student engagement, and lifesaving education. With 14 years in healthcare and 11 at Grandview, his career has taken him from emergency and critical care nursing to hospital and departmental leadership.

Born in Australia, Abbie now calls the Birmingham area home, where her entire nursing career has taken shape. She hopes to strengthen communication among local critical care nurses while using AACN’s digital platforms to share education, resources, opportunities, and the accomplishments of nurses across the community. During her six years in nursing, Abbie has served in Level I trauma, bedside critical care, clinical, supervisory, and leadership roles—most recently as Grandview’s Medical ICU Director.

Both were drawn to nursing by deeply personal experiences, and both continue to lead with the same purpose: supporting nurses, strengthening patient care, and making a difference when people need it most.

Evidence-based practice is the core of critical care nursing. Every month, we will highlight new research with practical applications to the ICU!
