Freedom City

Freedom City Iron City-Steel City-Magic City-Freedom City. Because of Freedom of Life and Liberty and Freedom of Civil and Human Rights, we have Freedom to Flourish.

Birmingham led national movements for Veterans Day & Civil Rights (honoring and advancing Freedom of Liberty & Rights). Nicknames for Birmingham have included Steel City, Iron City, Magic City, and now should add Freedom City before the World Games in 2021--adding positive branding for the national movements for Veterans Day and Civil/Human Rights that advanced here for the U.S. Birmingham has bee

n the "driving force" for America's Veterans Day and "cradle" of the Civil Rights Movement, the only city to have led on both. That makes the local and national history inspiring for students who see how people fulfilled their callings. This new page on Facebook is for people who value Birmingham, Alabama, and national contributions to freedom. We serve to inform and inspire teachers and students sharing why we are free to flourish and how using plans for school and life can help both students, parents, teachers, and others take more action with more purpose. When the World Games arrive, what message will we help them send home to their viewers and readers? Video history of 1963 or sustainable positive leadership for freedom of liberty, rights, and flourishing at our callings? We can change and improve to influence some who may choose to host their conventions here, send national and international students here for education, or choose to do business here. We are the City and State that led the national movement for honoring veterans leading to a federal holiday in 1954. Alabama (Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, Tuscaloosa) contributed to the national movement for Civil Rights in 1963 forward. Yet, fewer than 1% of the nation knows of Birmingham's positive and unique contributions to both Veterans Day and Human Rights--each connected to Freedom. It's up to the people and leaders to change that so students and others learn this in school and event planning--we can. When the media reports to millions of people, will they tell them of Birmingham as "Magic City" known for growth a century ago, a nickname used by over 10 U.S. cities and an "adult club" in Atlanta? Or, will they transform the perception of people (many who have not been here) to help them see a city that has stood for freedoms in ways unique in America. We can keep our favorite local nicknames though to the world, we can stand as Freedom City going forward. In this name stands Freedom, Liberty, Human Rights, Patriotism, Empowerment of Citizens. Do you also want those values? This effort is for Birmingham, Alabama, and patriots anywhere who value freedom as well as those who provide it. More students will understand the national history and the stories of those in their state who took action on school character traits like patriotism, courage, and perseverance to use their freedom to flourish. Teachers of millions of students across the USA will be able to get free online resources to teach history and character traits related to Veterans Day, Civil Rights, and taking action on both helping students write plans for school and life. Life Leaders America is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. Life Leaders offers this concept and resources citizens who care about helping Birmingham be its best, distinctive from other cities. National reputation, convention and tourism commerce, and education can benefit plus support intellectual and financial sustainability. Ideas for Action:

Thanks to Pat and Temple of the Oak Mountain DAR chapter for agreeing to display our America's Veterans Day started in Alabama poster. DAR stands for Daughters of the American Revolution.

Veterans Day for America started in 1947 in Birmingham. Veterans Day was signed into law as a federal holiday in 1954 by President Eisenhower. Raymond Weeks a world war II veteran from Birmingham presented the concept of a national veterans day to General Eisenhower on November 11th, 1946.

Character traits taught along with this history include patriotism, courage, perseverance, loyalty, and citizenship.

Why is this important? Alabama led the national movement to create Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars. Unfortunately most Americans do not know the who-when-where of this history because many schools do not have the information. Our goal is for all Alabamians to know at least the paragraph summary we provided. Alabama led the national movements for Veterans Day and Civil Rights--we think people should know. This can inspire students and help our the state with positive branding and tourism. DDD

Birmingham is the birthplace of America's Veterans Day. Two national movements were led from Birmingham, National Veterans Day and Civil Rights.

Colonel Danny Sample (retired) at right wearing his Halloween wig accepted our donated poster that states America's Veterans Day Started in Alabama. Photo by Colonel Bob Barefield (retired).

Bob and Nancy Barefield, Kyle Minor, and Temple Wells joined David Dyson for a meeting to distribute posters, handouts, and related materials to use during the Veterans Day season.

Kyle Minor and family are using the materials at a new tradition at the National Veteran Award reception and banquet to greet the 800 people expected to attend and share information about the founding of Veterans Day as well as tell them about Kyle's grandfather, Raymond Weeks, founder of America's Veterans Day in 1947.

Col. Barefield will be speaking to a civic group of about 40 people and will provide posters and handouts for them.

Temple Wells as Ms. Senior Alabama from Trussville has selected our patriotism program and compassion ranch animals as her platform and she has been telling everyone she knows about our initiatives. She is taking materials to share especially in civic groups and churches.

David Dyson will use the materials when speaking to the Daughters of the American Revolution and sending these materials out via email and social media. We also host www.VeteransDayFoundingEducation.us where resources for teachers and speakers can be found and used.

America's National Veterans Day started in Alabama. Yet most Americans do not know this inspiring history. Please tell a teacher and a student. If you know motivated principals and teachers wanting to include this in their classrooms or their events at their schools, I'm glad to help. David

The National Veteran Award was established for America in Birmingham in 1954, the year President Eisenhower signed the holiday into federal law. Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars.

The permanent award trophy is on display annually at the National Veteran Award banquet traditionally held on November 10, the evening before Veterans Day and the longest-running parade in America.

Students at three high schools in Birmingham where I have been guest speaker on Veterans Day History in Alabama, character traits, and planning for school and life...gave feedback and suggestions on surveys.

Birmingham

The nicknames they like most for Birmingham:
Magic City (100 years ago, growing like magic)
Freedom City (Freedom of Liberty/Veterans Day Movement, Freedom of Rights/Civil Rights Movement
Steel City (Steel Capital of the South)

Teach how Birmingham helped with freedoms (Freedom of Liberty / Veterans and Freedom of Rights / Civil Rights).

They also think Alabama needs a nickname that is known and better than Yellowhammer State, such as Freedom State (Veterans Day, Civil Rights...)

The mayor, governor, and president should say something.

Veterans Day History in Alabama

Teach students that Veterans Day started in Alabama. Most said, they had "no idea."

Start a national online campaign. Tell schools nationwide. Use Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Give teachers online information they can use.

Get books that include this history or tell the teachers how to give information not in the books.

If you know of a school wanting to add state history for Veterans Day, Life Leaders and I can help. We also can help improve student plans and performance.
