đź’ś Elder abuse is more common than many realize. June 15th is Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Studies estimate that 1 in 10 older adults in the United States experiences some form of elder abuse each year, including financial exploitation, neglect, emotional abuse, or physical harm. Even more concerning, experts believe most cases go unreported, often due to fear, isolation, or dependence on a caregiver.
Elder abuse happens:
• At home and in care settings
• To people of all backgrounds
• Most often at the hands of someone the older adult knows and trusts
Awareness saves lives. Knowing the signs and speaking up can help protect older adults and ensure they age with dignity, safety, and respect.
📞 In Alabama, suspected elder abuse can be reported to Adult Protective Services at 1‑800‑458‑7214. Reports can be made anonymously.
