The Half a Loaf project (HAL) seeks to address challenges in the local community in an effort to reduce childhood obesity and other food-related health problems by applying data compilation, community engagement and dissemination of information. - Overview -
Hunger remains a perennial problem in many US communities despite ongoing attempts by federal, state and nonprofit agencies to address the p
roblem and its ill-effects among vulnerable population groups. These disparities are most evident in specific urban areas within the city, with some neighborhoods now designated as food deserts by the USDA. Food deserts are defined as, “urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food,” (USDA).Through civic engagement and media, the Half a Loaf project (HAL) seeks to address these challenges in Binghamton in an effort to reduce childhood obesity and other food- related health problems. Through data compilation, community engagement and dissemination of information, we will strengthen the community’s ability to address the nutritional needs of the local population. Liking and following this page will allow you to keep up-to-date with our project; please help us spread awareness about food insecurity in Binghamton. Together, we will begin taking action to change our fellow residents’ situations.
