These two just joined our warehouse Carpet Warehouse Carpet & Flooring Outlets foster home in Johnson city. They must go together as they are a bonded pair. Cadbury is a very large kitten almost adult. 11 months old 14 lb! BlackBerry is 5 months old and they are very attached to one another. Both good with dogs cats and kids. Stop by and see them! In honor of Black Cat Appreciation day, we would like to share some fun facts:

1. Black cats can actually “rust.”
A black cat’s fur can develop reddish-brown or rusty patches in sunlight. This happens because UV exposure can break down the black pigment (eumelanin) in the hair.

2. Black cats aren’t necessarily genetically “all black.”
Many black cats have the tabby pattern genetically, but their heavy pigmentation masks it. In bright sunlight, you can sometimes see ghost stripes hiding underneath the black coat.

3. Some cultures actually consider black cats GOOD luck. 🍀
In parts of Britain, Japan, and elsewhere, black cats have historically been associated with good fortune, prosperity, or positive omens. In Japanese culture, for example, a black cat can be considered particularly lucky for unmarried women.

4. Black cats exist in wild species too.
The famous “black panther” isn’t actually its own species. It’s usually a melanistic leopard or jaguar. So your little house panther has a very real wild-cat counterpart. 🐆

5. Black cats & sailors 🐈‍⬛
Black cats were considered lucky by many sailors. Some sailors even believed that keeping a black cat at home would help protect their family member(s) at sea and ensure they returned safely. Black cats were also welcomed aboard ships because they kept rats and mice under control- which probably didn’t hurt their reputation for being lucky.

6. Whatever you do, don’t let the ship’s cat go overboard.
According to some maritime superstitions, a cat falling or being thrown overboard could bring a terrible storm- and if the ship survived, nine years of bad luck. 🌪️
