To my ABE Community Care family,
This is one of the hardest posts I’ve ever had to write. And my apologies in advance for how long it is. I appreciate you taking the time to read it, share it or contribute. 🫶
If you’ve noticed that I’ve been quieter lately, I want you to know it isn’t because I’ve stopped caring or because ABE Community Care is going anywhere. The truth is, I’m fighting a battle that many people don’t see.
Earlier this year, I suffered a traumatic brain injury after a serious accident. Since then, my life has changed in ways I never could have imagined. I live with constant headaches, memory problems, dizziness, very frequent episodes of passing out, vision issues, overwhelming fatigue, and many other symptoms that have made even everyday tasks incredibly difficult. There are days when simply getting through the day is my biggest accomplishment.
I’ve always been the person who wanted to help everyone else. That’s why I started ABE Community Care—to make sure people felt seen, supported, and valued during difficult times. Asking for help has never come easily to me.
But today, I have to be honest.
Between my medical condition, countless appointments, testing, treatments, and growing medical expenses that aren’t fully covered by insurance, I simply can’t continue operating at the same pace. Everything ABE has done has largely been funded out of my own pocket, and financially, it has become overwhelming.
Because of that, I’ll be taking a step back from the day-to-day public side of ABE Community Care for a little while. This doesn’t mean I’m giving up. It doesn’t mean ABE is ending. I still have the resources to provide, I still intend on the student care packages and backpacks. I’m not disappearing. It simply means I need to focus on healing so I can continue serving this community for years to come.
I’ll still be working behind the scenes—planning projects, organizing donations, answering messages as I’m able, and continuing to build ABE’s future. Things may move a little slower, but my heart for this mission has not changed.
If you’ve ever believed in what ABE Community Care stands for, this is the moment I need your support more than ever.
If you’re able to volunteer, donate supplies, sponsor a project, make a financial contribution, share our posts, or simply keep my family in your prayers, it would mean more than I can express.
For the first time in a long time, I have to admit something that is incredibly difficult to say:
I need help, too.
I’ve spent so much of my life trying to be the one others could count on. Right now, I have to trust that the same community we’ve worked so hard to build will help carry me through this season.
Thank you for standing beside me, believing in this mission, and reminding me that it’s okay to receive help while working toward healing.
This isn’t goodbye.
It’s simply a chapter where healing comes first so that ABE Community Care can continue making a difference for many years to come.
With love and gratitude,
Alexis Thomas
