β οΈ Many invasive plants were originally sold as attractive landscaping choices. Once they escape yards, they can spread into forests, fields and waterways, where they crowd out native plants.
πΈ Bradford pear: Cultivated trees can cross-pollinate and produce thorny wild offspring. Remove young seedlings before they become established.
πΏ Tree-of-heaven: Spreads through seeds and aggressive underground roots. Cutting it alone may trigger many new shoots, so correct control is important.
π Norway maple: Recognizable by the milky sap from a broken leaf stalk. Its dense shade can prevent native woodland plants from growing beneath it.
π΄ Burning bush: Birds carry its berries into natural areas. Look for bright-red fall foliage and corky βwingsβ along the stems.
π± Japanese barberry: Its thorny branches form dense patches that restrict native growth. Birds help spread its small red berries.
πΌ Chinese privet: Produces clusters of white flowers followed by dark berries. It can quickly create thick, difficult-to-cross shrub colonies.
