WAM supported 4 local surgical camps at Kabudula with AHA in 2021! During these camps, patients from remote villages receive free surgery they would otherwise not be able to access at the community hospital, while local clinicians gain more hands-on experience with major procedures under the supervision of a visiting expert from Lilongwe. Our goal for 2022 is to conduct at least 10 camps in order to serve the long list of patients still waiting for surgery at Kab! Please support local surgeons to continue the camps through a donation on our website. Thanks!

We completed 160 general surgical procedures at Kabudula in 2021 through local surgical camps, in partnership with AHA. General procedures were not being done at the community hospital until AHA began international surgical camps there with support from WAM in 2014. The training element of the camps led to Kab clinicians learning how to perform the procedures on their own. Please continue to support local surgical camps throughout the year as our goal is to complete 500 surgeries at Kab in 2022!!!

In partnership with AHA, we also support improved neonatal care at Kabudula, especially for many infants born prematurely. This wooden box has heat lamps underneath for warmth and hinged sides for easy equipment access. It’s made from locally available materials and is easily maintained by simply changing lightbulbs! Thanks to Nkhoma Hospital for sharing this proven model for introduction at Kabudula.

Melesia had a CT scan and was approved for surgery! She needs $500 to cover all costs associated with removing the mass from her pelvis, including specialist fees and transportation from her home village to the hospital. Thanks in advance for your support!

Melesia needs our help! Her abdomen has been swelling due to a pelvic mass, and she is only 8 years old! She was referred to us by a surgeon at one of our partner facilities who recommended a CT scan to better inform a treatment plan for her. This costs $200. Donations may be made on the WAM or AHA website. Thanks for your support in advance!

This young man was finally able to return to school without facing peer ridicule after having his forehead mass removed through our local surgical outreach program at Kabudula. This program provides surgical services for patients in rural areas who would not be able to access treatment otherwise, while training local clinicians to improve the capacity of the community hospital at Kabudula.

Gladys, who was sponsored for thyroid surgery in December, came to deliver pumpkins and groundnuts from her family’s farm to WAM/AHA staff to express her thanks for successful treatment! She was proud to show off her son who has just begun his first year of secondary school (high school in Malawi). She also met another woman with a similar condition who is still waiting for surgery, and she was able to offer her a sense of hope as well.
