California Invasive Plant Council

California Invasive Plant Council Cal-IPC's mission is to protect California's lands and waters from ecologically-damaging invasive plants through science, education, and policy.

Over the past 30 years, Cal-IPC has supported the needs of natural resource managers and researchers by addressing policy, science, and education related to invasive plants. We train professional and volunteer land stewards, sharing education through:
• The annual Cal-IPC Symposium .
• Training courses
• Publications - Don’t Plant a Pest brochures, a quarterly newsletter, books,

and the California Invasive Plant Inventory. The Inventory is recognized the definitive list of invasive plants throughout the state. We design science-based tools:
• Risk mapping – collects critical data on the current distribution of each invasive plant species in the state, and predicts vulnerability to future spread using climatic modeling tools.
• Research - distribution and impact reports, detailed maps of selected invasive plants
• California Horticultural Invasives Prevention (Cal-HIP) partnership – We provide the scientific foundation for this state and national partnership with the horticultural community. We advocate for sound public policy and funding:
• Invasive W**ds Awareness Day at the Capitol – An annual advocacy day in Sacramento where teams of natural resource managers visit the offices of all 120 state legislators.
• California Invasive Species Advisory Committee – Created by the Invasive Species Council of California to provide advice and develop recommendations.
• National advocacy coordination – Cal-IPC, on behalf of the National Association of Exotic Pest Plant Councils, led a national campaign encouraging natural resource managers to comment on USDA’s proposed improvements to plant import regulations.

Teamwork makes the dream work! With funding from USFS and in partnership with the El Dorado County Agricultural Commissioner, Cal-IPC is coordinating the continued control of invasive yellow star thistle on the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, which is used as an Incident Command Post for large fires in the region. W**d control is essential in staging areas such as these to prevent propagules from hitchhiking on personnel and equipment into natural areas.

This photo shows the fairgrounds being used as a base camp for Caldor Fire operations in August 2021.

A HUGE thank you to all those who donated to this year’s Spring Campaign! With your support, we raised over $69,000, blowing our $50K goal out of the water. We appreciate this amazing community for the continued support and for being part of our pledge to Doug Johnson, Executive Director of 24 years, to keep Cal-IPC a leader in advocating for WMAs, sharing resources and tools with land managers, training the next and current generations, and supporting on-the-ground work across the state.

As part of Cal-IPC's workforce development focus, we have teamed up with Oakland Civicorps to create the Civicorps Outdoor Leadership Adventures (COLA) program, where Corpsmembers and Crew Leaders develop project management skills by creating, organizing, and leading outdoor trips for their peers. The most recent trip was a hike along the Cataract Falls trail in Marin to catch all the post-rain waterfalls!

Did you know that restoring ecosystems not only helps the land, but also has economic benefits for local communities?

A recent economic analysis of large-scale restoration projects in state parks on the CA North Coast shows that investments in public lands not only restore ecosystems, they create meaningful, well-paying jobs that benefit the local economy. It highlights how regional restoration initiatives comprised of multiple partners demonstrates how high-quality jobs can be sustained while helping to heal the landscape.

As the 2026 Spring Fundraiser comes to a close, we want to again highlight the outstanding contributions of Doug Johnson, Cal-IPC’s Executive Director for 24 years, as he steps down to a support role as Executive Director Emeritus and addresses health challenges. Your gift to the Spring Campaign will help Cal-IPC provide crucial tools and support for land managers across the state. With your help, we're providing key education opportunities, guiding on-the-ground projects, and advocating for stronger policy and funding to protect California from the threat of invasive plants.

We appreciate you for your partnership in this important work.
