Over the past 30 years, Cal-IPC has supported the needs of natural resource managers and researchers by addressing policy, science, and education related to invasive plants. We train professional and volunteer land stewards, sharing education through:
• The annual Cal-IPC Symposium .
• Training courses
• Publications - Don’t Plant a Pest brochures, a quarterly newsletter, books,
and the California Invasive Plant Inventory. The Inventory is recognized the definitive list of invasive plants throughout the state. We design science-based tools:
• Risk mapping – collects critical data on the current distribution of each invasive plant species in the state, and predicts vulnerability to future spread using climatic modeling tools.
• Research - distribution and impact reports, detailed maps of selected invasive plants
• California Horticultural Invasives Prevention (Cal-HIP) partnership – We provide the scientific foundation for this state and national partnership with the horticultural community. We advocate for sound public policy and funding:
• Invasive W**ds Awareness Day at the Capitol – An annual advocacy day in Sacramento where teams of natural resource managers visit the offices of all 120 state legislators.
• California Invasive Species Advisory Committee – Created by the Invasive Species Council of California to provide advice and develop recommendations.
• National advocacy coordination – Cal-IPC, on behalf of the National Association of Exotic Pest Plant Councils, led a national campaign encouraging natural resource managers to comment on USDA’s proposed improvements to plant import regulations.
