Pixie joined our sanctuary back in the spring of 2023. She was a rodent control agent for the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, VA before suffering a leg injury that took her out of commission. They reached out to us asking if we could give her a home and she made her way to us.

While her leg could have been amputated, the decision was made to see how she does with what is essentially a “bum leg”. It doesn’t cause her pain, it doesn’t limit her mobility, it has good blood flow, and she can and does put weight on it. If it ever reaches the point where it’s an actual problem, we can revisit amputation.

But three years later, she’s doing quite well! We have no reason to think the kitten Ozone can’t have a similar happy and healthy life. We’ll have him checked out this week just to be sure we’re on the right path. Pixie was too feral to be adopted out (she’s less feral now) but Ozone doesn’t have that obstacle. He’ll eventually be available for adoption once he’s got the all clear!

Happy Mother’s Day! Here’s a throwback to… wait. That’s not a throwback. That was last week! Frankie still proves she’s a good mama even after her spay a few months ago. Those kittens are almost 5 months old and about to get spayed themselves and yet they need the occasional comfort suckle.

Shoutout to all the moms, stepmoms, grandmoms, aunt-moms, friend-moms, and fur-moms who strive every day to see that their kiddos are happy and healthy.

Shortly after our post about the kittens we took in, we saw this post from our local animal control and couldn’t say no. If you’ve followed us a while, you’ll know about Pixie, our “3 and a half legged” resident feline. She came to us having recently suffered a leg injury as a stray, and now she’s living the good life. This little boy will hopefully have the same outcome!

Ozone is currently very stable, eating and drinking great. He has even shown he’ll put weight on the leg. He will be seen by our vet this week and we’ll come up with a game plan to ensure he continues to stay happy and healthy ❤️‍🩹

It’s kitten season for sure. We had our singleton, Sal, all of about a week before the need came in for four more babies about his age that needed a rescue to intake them. We had someone in our family interested in two kittens so we went ahead and agreed to take the four, knowing two had a home.

Then about an hour after animal control dropped off the four, another singleton needed help. “What’s one more?” So the fifth little one joined the group and we now have SIX young kittens. They are about 4-5 weeks old and have been cleaned and dewormed. They are already starting to learn the litter box and eating regular kitten food.

And the friend adopting Sal? She’s going to take in one of the newbies too! 🙌 The black boy kitten (third photo) will join Sal (fourth photo) in a few weeks with their new mom. The two girls in the group, the calico (fifth photo) and light gray (last photo), will be adopted by our family member and also go to their new home in a few weeks.

Got FOMO? The two remaining boys are open for adoption! They are a dark gray (first photo) and a mackerel tabby (second photo). Check the comments for the dark gray’s intake photo 😹 Let us know if you’re within a four hour radius of Berkeley Springs, WV and interested in adopting!

Great information from our local animal control. Share share share!

We've gotten several calls just these week for injured or "abandoned" kittens.

We DO NOT generally intake healthy cats and kittens. Unfortunately as the municipal law enforcement shelter, we don't have the resources to.

There is no law that covers cats running at large, which gives us limited authority on what we are able to intake.

However, we will step in if there is an immediate welfare concern. If the animal is at risk of death or injury, or are if they are already injured or very sick.

In the instance that the animal does not require immediate intervention, we are able to network them.

We are also happy to provide information on local resources that may be able to provide further help.

Please don't hesitate to contact our office if you feel we may be in need of assistance.

Our old man Coco is enjoying the vet-prescribed diet of soaked alfalfa and feed. His Cushings is slowly getting under control with his medication and we are slowly but surely getting his weight up. We know our time with our sweet boy and first horse is limited but until the time comes, we are embracing every moment. Like the excitement of feed time!

Our oldest bird resident, Bob the female Cayuga duck, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 9. She and her sister, Jay, who passed away a few years ago, were our very first ducks. Even though Bob grayed out as she aged, she maintained her calm grace as our flock of rescues grew. Never pushy, never pushed upon, just a chill and relaxed old lady who loved being the first in the pool after it was cleaned. We’ll miss her following us around to make sure we did our jobs to her satisfaction. We are so glad we had all those years with her, though we always wish we had more ❤️‍🩹

Happy Caturday! Bottle baby kitten Sal is doing very well, having just reached 4 weeks old. And the best news? He already has a home waiting for him! Friend of the sanctuary, Katelyn, has moved into her first apartment and ready for a new addition. She met Sal and instantly fell in love with him. Now we just need to get him weaned and litter box trained, then he’s off to his furever home!

Huge shoutout to our friends Jeff, Haley, and their son Cary for donating these gently used fence rails! They took down a split rail fence at their house and offered the rails to us, which we happily accepted. We can always use materials like this around the sanctuary. There’s already several projects we intend to use these for, including shoring up weak areas of the pig enclosure that inevitably pop up. So thank you, Thomas family!!
