The Grassroots Grazing Group hosted our first pasture walk of the season with Bryan and Kim Meldrum on their new farm near Durham, AR—and what a great start it was! With 140 acres of opportunity, including ponds, streams, wooded areas, and open pasture, the Meldrums are laying the groundwork for a South Poll cattle operation alongside plans for pigs and chickens.
About 20 folks joined us for a day full of learning, conversation, and connection. We walked the property to talk through fencing and waterline plans, forage and soil health, cattle working facilities, invasive plant species management, and strategies for healing erosion on steeper slopes. Throughout the day, producers shared their own experiences, offering ideas, encouragement, and real-world advice that will go a long way for the Meldrum family on their new farm.
TJ Hein from Savanna Springs, LLC shared his expertise on hydrology, native ecology, and land restoration and how it can complement an agricultural operation. From improving spring-fed ponds to redirecting road runoff to prevent erosion, his insights sparked a lot of great discussion!
More than anything, this pasture walk was a great reminder of the value of peer-to-peer learning. From technical guidance from local experts to shared producer knowledge, everyone walked away with something new. A huge thanks to the Meldrum family for their warm hospitality (and fantastic barbecue lunch!) and to everyone who made the day such a success!
