For five years, the Michigan Black Summit has brought Black voices together from across Michigan. But in 2027, we’re taking it a step further.

This year is about BLACK ACTION.

Black communities are often among the most dependable voting blocs in this country. We show up. We organize. We vote. We help determine elections.

But after Election Day, what happens to Black issues?

What happens to Black education? Black economic development? Black healthcare? Housing? Black leadership? Our businesses? Our neighborhoods?

Too often, we are told what we need to fight against, but we haven't spent enough time developing a collective strategy for what we're fighting FOR.

The 5th Michigan Black Summit is about changing that.

We are bringing Black Michigan together not just to talk, but to ORGANIZE. DEVELOP STRATEGIES. BUILD POWER. AND CREATE ACTION.

What does a real Black agenda for Michigan look like?

How do we hold elected leaders accountable after the election is over?

How do we build stronger Black institutions and develop the next generation of Black leadership?

How do we turn our voting power into economic, educational and political power?

For five years, we've gathered.

Now it's time to move.

Michigan Black Summit 2027

WHAT’S GOING ON?

From Conversation to Black Action.

08/24/2026

We’ve been to the conferences. We’ve attended the gatherings. We’ve heard the speeches, sat through the panels, and talked about the issues facing Black communities.

But for the 2027 Michigan Black Summit, we’re doing something different.

This year, we’re focused on BLACK ACTION.

Our theme is “WHAT’S GOING ON?” because there is A LOT going on in Black America and right here in Black Michigan.

But we don’t just want to ask, What’s going on?

We want to ask: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

For two days, we’re bringing people from across Michigan together to talk about Black education, healthcare, economic development, housing, leadership, voting rights and the future of our communities.
And this time, the conversation has to lead to a PLAN.

How do we galvanize Black Michigan?

What does our agenda look like?

What are our priorities?

And when we leave the Summit, what are we actually going to DO?
We’ve talked long enough.

2027 is about BLACK ACTION.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

We’re not just gathering.

We’re building a blueprint for Black Michigan.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

When we look at the state of Black rights in America today, we have to ask the question Marvin Gaye asked more than 50 years ago: What’s Going On?

What’s going on when Supreme Court decisions have reshaped affirmative action and weakened tools that helped open doors for Black students and other historically excluded communities?

What’s going on when voting-rights protections continue to be fought over in courtrooms across this country?

What’s going on when DEI programs, Black history, Black institutions, and even the language we use to address racial inequality are under attack?

And what’s going on when Black leadership is being challenged, dismantled, defunded, or pushed out of spaces where our voices are desperately needed?

This moment requires more than outrage. It requires Black action.

That is why the 5th Michigan Black Summit matters.

We cannot simply talk about what is happening to Black America. We have to organize around Black education, Black healthcare, Black economic development, housing, leadership, voting rights, and the future of our communities.

The Michigan Black Summit was created to bring our people into one room not just to discuss the problems, but to build solutions, strengthen leadership, connect resources, and develop an agenda for action.

Five years later, the question is even more urgent:

WHAT’S GOING ON?

And more importantly:

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

The 5th Michigan Black Summit is not just another conference.

It is a call to action.

If you know of any representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) who may be interested in participating in an upcoming HBCU College Fair, please let me know!

One of our Michigan Black Summit committee members is organizing the fair, and we would love to help connect them with HBCU admissions representatives, recruiters, alumni associations, and other college representatives who can bring information and opportunities directly to our students.

If you have a connection to an HBCU or know someone we should contact, please send their information my way or tag them below.

Let’s make sure our young people know that HBCUs are an option, an opportunity, and a pathway to excellence.
