Today we’re debuting Elvis, our sweet and—sadly—only Abyssinian (we still miss you, Cisco Ramon 💔).

Elvis came to us as a “cage mate” to the fabulous Shaggy a little over two years ago. And by “cage mate”, we mean they were not friends in the slightest and were actively fighting in the tiny cage they were housed in at a big name pet store we shall not name (we were there getting food, not intending on adopting any animals, let alone two). We took them off of the pet store’s hands when it was clear to us that the staff had zero idea what pignado-ing was, as they cooed at their obvious fighting and said they were friends. 🙄🤦‍♀️

Thankfully, Elvis and Shaggy are not housed together and haven’t been since we rescued them, and they’re living their best lives as neighbors that share walls! ♥️

A shy and sweet boy, Elvis does require his right eye to be flushed every now and then when hay debris gets into it, as he was born with two differently sized eyes and had to have surgery on the right eye when he was a pup to remove some sort of mass that had grown on it. There’s been no comebacks from that mass, but every now and then, some good eye drops take care of his eye whenever it gets funky (like Romero’s).

He enjoys bananas 🍌, cucumbers 🥒, and cuddles 🥰; he shows his appreciation with kisses! 💋 ♥️

Meet Romero!
This little legend is one of our most memorable Guinea Pig residents at Herd and Feather Sanctuary — named after the iconic George A. Romero, creator of Night of the Living Dead! Why the zombie name? When Romero first arrived, he had an injured eye that gave him a spooky-cute look straight out of a zombie flick. Thankfully, he’s healed up beautifully and now spends his days munching veggies and enjoying cozy naps, still rocking his one-of-a-kind charm.

Two Big Vet Bills, One Big Reason: Love and Responsibility

At Herd and Feather Sanctuary, we go the extra mile—literally—for those in our care. Whether it’s a sick piggy or a bird in need, we drive several miles to reach the best exotic vet around because they deserve nothing less.

We’re proud that this clinic believes in what we do—they even refer unwanted guinea pigs to us because they know we’ll step up. We’re grateful to receive a rescue discount, but two recent vet visits have added up quickly.

These animals didn’t ask to be abandoned, neglected, or sick. They rely on us—and right now, we’re relying on our community to help us keep giving them the care they need and deserve.

Today seemed full of brambles. The dryer almost caught on fire, our phones were about to be shut off as of tomorrow, we just got denied for SNAP and Adult Financial, and we were losing hope.

But the universe, God, the Spirit of love, however you see it as…. Reached out via two kind souls. They paid our phone bill, bought us dinner, sent Guinea Pig food for our little ones (thankfully the ducks still have food to last for a little while longer), and are still sending more blessings our way. 😭 ♥️

Today we spotlight our Fabio-in-Residence, Shaggy! He’ll be 3 years old in December and he knows how fabulous his coat is! 🥰 He’s not afraid to voice his opinions and loves to woo our ladies despite the physical barriers between them.

We’re featuring Miracle, our disabled Pekin male!

🌟 He’s a lot smaller than normal Pekins, but he’s determined and a fighter!

Miracle came to us as a small duckling about 3 years ago, frail and stick-thin, unable to walk as his legs can’t hold him up. With love and round the clock care in those critical first 24 hours, he survived the night and earned the name Miracle!
