I am absolutely filled with gratitude and feel extremely blessed for my opportunity coaching Cougs Lacrosse. What was supposed to happen at the end of the 2021 season, my retirement, was put on hold to ensure we made the transition to a new head coach the best it could be for the student-athletes in the program. While Samantha and I were planning to be on our next journey, we are so happy as we thoroughly enjoyed one more season. Every day I awake thinking I am living a dream!
When I first took the head coach position, I made my mission to “teach leadership and coach lacrosse.” The game provides so many learning opportunities outside of the Xs and Os to help boys along their journey to becoming young men. In the almost 8 years since taking over, we’ve achieved so much together in the Cougs Lacrosse community. Going from a fledgling low number varsity only just past start-up, struggling to win games, to a state championship playoff caliber program with not only high school teams, but also youth teams has been an incredible journey not many get to experience. Many program first have been achieved along the journey!
With that said, while on field success is great, the wins and losses are a dime a dozen. The much more important successes for me came in the form of watching our student-athletes learn the life lessons and seeing so many alumni come back to share how their experience with Cougs lacrosse helped them along their journey post high school. The leadership lessons are invaluable and the positive impact on the student-athletes are extremely significant. My time and energy was well spent helping these boys to become young men. When you’re asked to officiate a wedding of an alumni, you know your doing something right!
The ups, the downs, the challenges, and successes any coach gets the opportunity to experience with their student-athletes is a small microcosm of life. That’s where the learning opportunities exist for all to take advantage of. I’ve learned so much from my time coaching these amazing young people and smile every time I see a part of their journey or reflect on our experiences together. I look forward to continuing to stay in contact with the many I have had the privilege of sharing this journey with; student-athletes, alumni, their families, and our amazing assistant coaches.
Samantha and I have met so many great people, many who have become great friends. We thank everyone of you for making this opportunity possible, allowing us to become part of your lives for a brief moment in time and share in the experience with your family. It was an honor and my pleasure to coach your boys and teach the ever-important life lessons.
Lastly but first in my heart, I’d like to say thank you to my amazing wife, Samantha. I am forever grateful for her love and support. Like many coaches’ spouses, she knows what goes on behind the scenes. The extreme highs and lows, she has been my rock every step of the way and I would not have been able to do it without her unwavering support. Our next journey awaits us and as we take the next step, we are better people for sharing this incredible journey with you.
With gratitude and a blessed heart, thank you!
To all my boys and young men, I’m taking the $20 bill !!!
GO COUGS!!!
