An integral part of the positive discipline approach is the belief that to do better, kids must feel better. An environment of blame, pain, and shame for sure temporarily stops unwanted behavior but not only does it NOT foster growth and learning, but it has terrible side-effects- decreased self-esteem, fractured trust, anger at caregiver, generalized fear.
The same is true for us caregivers. Learning new approaches to raising kids with the inner background noise of blame, pain and shame: “that was stupid.” “I’m really messing up.” “why can’t I keep my cool?” and similar self-talk will NOT foster learning but WILL zap our energy and inhibit our growth.
The words we speak to ourselves matter. This is the foundational mindset of our learning together. Practice, not perfect.
