They say health comes before happiness. They also say that no one’s happy if mom isn’t happy, so one more small leap of logic means that a mom’s health and happiness are responsible for the well-being of the entire family. In the daily race of a busy family life, mom’s needs often come around the track in last place. This month we're engaging in maternal mental health awareness, and we’re here to help you re-prioritize the mental wellness of arguably the most valuable player on your family team – MOM!
1. Find small, healthy distractions in your day when you need the dopamine burst you’ve been getting from the doom scroll. Make a cup of tea, start a journal, put together a batch of muffins, or text an IRL friend something funny your kid said that day.
2. Reconnect with what you love. Find pockets of time and energy to do the things that don’t have anything to do with motherhood. Book a sitter for something that might seem silly, but that you enjoy. Play tennis, take a class, visit a friend, or nurture a hobby.
3. Prioritize your sleep hygiene, make healthy food a priority, and set aside time for stillness. If you can’t hear yourself think, you’ll never know what you’re feeling, and more importantly, what you’re needing to be at your best.
4. Commit to reaching out! Share a laugh. Ask for help. Say hi. This month, connect with the moms and caregivers who shoulder so much. (more info at https://www.marcopolo.me/stories/ )
This spring, we want you to continue blooming into that well-balanced woman who is ready for the next season of her beautiful life. Motherhood wasn’t meant to wear you out for the sake of the family. It was meant to be your lead role in a play that showcases your many gifts and talents and allows you to enjoy all that you are to so many people. Be well, Mama. Be well so that you can enjoy the life you’ve been given!
