Dear Family and Friends,
I am writing to share a very personal health situation with you, which is difficult for me to do. As some of you may knowd, my kidneys are failing, and my doctors have recommended a kidney transplant as the best possible treatment.
I am currently on the waiting list for a kidney from a deceased donor, but the average wait time can be five years or more. Life on dialysis is challenging; I go for treatments three times a week for several hours each session, which is physically draining and limits my ability to work and attend family functions.
My doctors have informed me that a transplant from a living donor is my best option for a longer, healthier life, and kidneys from living donors generally last almost twice as long as those from deceased donors.
I want to be clear that I am not asking any one person to donate their kidney. I know this is a huge, personal decision. Instead, I am sharing my story and reaching out to my community in case someone might be willing to explore the possibility of living donation.
Here are some facts I've learned that you might find helpful:
Most people can live a normal, healthy life with just one kidney.
Donors don't have to be related to me or have the same blood type (paired exchange programs can facilitate a swap if we aren't a match).
The donor's medical expenses for the evaluation and surgery are typically covered by my insurance, and there are resources to help with other costs like travel and lodging.
The process is entirely confidential. A separate medical team works with potential donors, and any interested person can decide at any point not to donate, without me ever knowing the reason.
If you are interested in learning more about living kidney donation in general, you can have a confidential conversation with my transplant center's living donor coordinator.
Please contact Methodist Specialty and Transplant at 210-575-8425 or visit their website at https://livingdonor-methodistsa.com/.
If donation isn't for you, I completely understand and respect that, and it will not affect our relationship in any way. The biggest help you can provide, if you are comfortable, is simply to share my story with your own network of friends, family, and community members. You never know who might be able to help.
Thank you so much for your time, support, and for helping to spread the word.
With love and appreciation,
Teresa Scott
