Belmont Against Racism

Belmont Against Racism Founded in 1992, we are a community-action, all-volunteer organization that tackles issues of racism with the motto: "Think globally.

Act locally!" While our initial focus was on racism, we now also address different forms of bigotry and social injustice.

We had a wonderful time participating in the Belmont AAPI Fair yesterday! Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, connected with us, and helped celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with our community.
Congratulations to the winners of our book raffle! We’re excited to share two amazing books with them:
“Minor Feelings” by Cathy Park Hong
“Your House Will Pay” by Steph Cha
We hope you enjoy the reads, and we’d love for you to join our book group at the Belmont Public Library sometime for future discussions and community conversations. Visit: https://belmontagainstracism.org/bookgroup for more info.
It was inspiring to celebrate alongside local clubs and organizations, student speaker panelists, and talented performers. Thank you to everyone who made the event so special!

What a truly extraordinary night at our Annual Meeting — from amazing performances by our friends at City Strings United Boston, Bithyah Israel, and Sean Antongiorgi, to a truly remarkable keynote by Dr. Darnell Thigpen Williams, who reminded us that “Protective Enactment Theory of Black Excellence is about building systems that protect — not hoping the right people are in the room,” that “Goodwill is beautiful. But goodwill is fragile,” and that “Systems outlast individuals.”
We are deeply grateful for the presence, partnership, and support of our new partners at Hispanas Amigas en Massachusetts; Belmont Public Library Community Outreach Librarian Janina Majeran; our new Police Chief Shane Smith; our newly elected Select Board member Carol Kennedy Berberian; and Belmont School Committee Chair Meg Moriarty. Your willingness to show up, engage, and stand with our community matters deeply.
But our biggest gratitude goes to all the parents and students, former BAR board members, educators, and the many other members of our community whose names aren’t listed here — for showing up, for coming together, and for helping us continue to build a more inclusive town where everyone, regardless of background or lived experience, is seen, heard, respected, and feels like they belong.
And like the good reverend once said, “You can pretend to care, but you cannot pretend to show up.”
So thank you for showing up last night.
