Port of Bellingham's decision to end ABC Recycling's lease on its waterfront scrap metal storage is good news for local water quality. Since 2022, the scrap metal pile had been on local agencies' radars after several water pollution infractions. While ABC began addressing some of these, it became clear they wouldn't be able to fix all the issues. Air pollution from unregulated metal dust was also a concern of many community members.
This is a perfect moment to reflect on what we *want* from Bellingham's waterfront in the 21st century.
As toxic sites from decades of former industrial activity are cleaned up, our community will undoubtedly see more proposals for new businesses, industry, housing and more. Much of the public input that agencies sought about residents' big-picture hopes for the waterfront happened nearly 20 years ago — Whatcom County, and the world, are much different now. We support a working waterfront that supports a local economy. But proposals must also protect the marine environment and human health, or else who is that thriving local economy for?
RE Sources has monitored pollution in Bellingham over 30 years, and in the last few years have ramped up science sampling of stormwater quality — data that no government agency is currently gathering. We both respond to emerging threats, like stopping the largest coal export terminal ever proposed on this continent in the 2010s, and rally the community to pass policies that prevent threats from arising in the first place. Efforts to update land use code, or incorporate climate resilience into local Growth Management Act policies, are not exactly as sexy as a campaign to stop a big polluter from coming to town. But that's the work RE Sources staff and our fantastic supporters know is essential: protecting what we love, while planning ahead to prevent future threats and working toward our vision of restored ecosystems and healthier communities.
An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure. The continued diligence of this community and our staff is how we'll keep water (and air) clean for generations to come. Join us in working towards proactive protections!
