What we believe and how we operate 💡

The setup creates half the conditions for connection. The other half is how you show up as a volunteer.

🌐 None of us can force ourselves to want to help, but you can keep showing up with some wish to make a good connection, and that wish tends to grow the more you do it.

People come for all kinds of reasons, and that's fine. We just ask that part of it is wanting to do some good for the person you're talking to, not only to get something back yourself.

It was wonderful meeting so many local changemakers and leaders at Believe in Bellevue, Washington, USA!

We brought a map of the Eastside and asked people to mark their favorite walking spots with a star. It filled up fast. So did our signup sheet of people interested in learning more about Acquaint Walks. Thank you to everyone who signed up and stopped by!

So many insightful conversations. We spoke with one woman who told us she's retired and walks all the time. She said she's always seeing other people out walking alone, older women especially, and she'd love to invite them to join her. But she finds it hard to ask (something we strongly relate to). She thought Acquaint Walks could be the thing that makes it easier for her to walk with people in her community that she wouldn’t otherwise. We hope she’s right.

Thank you to Joe Fain, the President and CEO of the Bellevue Chamber for the warm welcome! And to Ashley C., Sarah Martinez, and other members of the Chamber for making this event possible. We also got to know our neighbors at the next table, BIGHUG, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering economic growth and sustainability within the Korean American community.

Acquaint Walks is our community walking program launching here on the Eastside. If you want to be part of the first walks, visit acquaint.org/walks

Finally, thank you to our amazing friends and volunteers, Diane S. and Patricia Bravo for helping us throughout the night!

After every one-on-one global conversation on Acquaint, volunteers have the opportunity to write an appreciation note for each other.

💌 Without even knowing whether they will speak to each other again, many take up this opportunity to write moving, meaningful messages like Lanh shares to Almyas.

If we try to appreciate each other’s humanity, we will continue to get better at finding it, making more space to transform conflict into progress.

There are two main objectives for each Acquaint conversation: connect with someone you wouldn’t normally talk to, and deliberately practice human connection.

The Acquaint Mindset guides our mission and allows volunteers to connect, just like Jahleel!

When was the last time you shared a note of appreciation with someone in your life?

After every one-on-one global conversation on Acquaint, volunteers have the opportunity to write an appreciation note for each other.

💌Without even knowing whether they will speak to each other again, many take up this opportunity to write moving, meaningful messages like Victor shares with Zeina.

It is a simple act. It doesn’t take much time, but it often captures a moment of pure good where one person truly wants another to feel happy and recognized.

Deepening human connection could solve the world’s greatest challenges. And it starts with each of us.

By volunteering to practice human connection, you’ll transform the way you relate to others and, in doing so, help transform the world.

In semi-structured one-on-one conversations, Acquainters connect across cultures, beliefs, and life experiences. Along the way, they build communication skills, develop empathy, and often uncover unexpected insights about others and themselves.

Last week, Solomon hosted an Acquaint Walk in celebration of Sierra Leone’s Independence Day!

💭Here are the amazing reflections that came out of it:

“I am super excited about all the reflections shared by the participants and hearing from two people about 40 years old, saying they have never experienced or participated in such an impactful event is just amazing.

The most impacted participants were the ones who did not fully understand what the walk was about until it started.

My happiest moment was when everyone showed commitment to looking forward to more walks.

I am looking forward to doing more walks with you all.”
