Growing Community Through Fields of Honor
Honoring Veterans, Strengthening Our Community, and Sharing Farmstead Skills

Wordhouse Community Foundation is proud to continue growing our Fields of Honor Veteran Enrichment Program, a series of free, hands-on experiences designed to bring veterans together through meaningful activities, friendship, and time spent in a peaceful farm setting.

Last month, we welcomed several local veterans to the farm for a compound butter workshop. Using fresh herbs from the garden, guests created their own flavored butters while learning about different herb combinations and uses.

The workshop also gave everyone an opportunity to explore the gardens, meet the farm animals, and enjoy time together in a relaxed environment. It was a wonderful day filled with conversation, laughter, learning, and connection.

Monthly Farmstead Workshops Are Coming

We are developing a new series of monthly farmstead workshops for the public that will parallel many of the activities offered through Fields of Honor.

These public workshops will give community members the opportunity to learn practical farmstead, gardening, cooking, and traditional skills. Proceeds from the workshops will help offset the cost of providing our veteran enrichment programs.

By attending a workshop, participants will not only learn something new—they will also help provide meaningful experiences for local veterans.

Future workshop topics may include:

Creating herbal teas
Naturally fermented fruit and herbal sodas
Food preservation
Useful wild plants and herbs
Foraging
Gardening and seasonal farm skills

More information about workshop dates and registration will be shared soon.

Supporting Student Athletes and Musicians

As we prepare for the coming school year, Wordhouse Community Foundation is also developing programs to support local student athletes and student musicians.

Participation in sports, band, orchestra, choir, and other school activities can create significant expenses for families. Equipment, uniforms, instruments, lessons, participation fees, travel, camps, and competition costs can prevent talented and hardworking students from fully participating.

Our goal is to help eligible students and families with some of these expenses while also providing practical financial education for both parents and students.

Students participating in the program may have opportunities to learn about:

Creating and following a basic budget
Understanding the true cost of participating in an activity
Setting short-term and long-term financial goals
Planning and participating in responsible fundraising
Saving for equipment, travel, lessons, camps, and fees
Making informed purchasing decisions
Understanding financial responsibility and accountability
Writing thank-you letters and reporting how awarded funds were used

We want students to receive more than temporary financial assistance. We want them to gain skills that will help them manage money, plan for future goals, and understand the work and responsibility involved in funding their interests.

Additional information about eligibility, applications, funding availability, and community sponsorship opportunities will be announced before the new school year.

Supporting Local Food Pantries

Community partnerships remain an important part of our mission. We recently helped raise money for two local food pantries that provide food and essential support to families in our area.

We are grateful to everyone who donated, purchased tickets, volunteered, or helped spread the word. Every contribution helps strengthen the organizations that serve our neighbors.

Detroit Tigers Ticket Fundraiser

Our Detroit Tigers ticket fundraiser is in full swing, and the winner will be announced on June 27. This gives our supporters a chance to win a great baseball experience while helping fund Wordhouse Community Foundation programs.

Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets and supported the fundraiser. Funds raised help us continue developing veteran enrichment activities, student programs, community events, and local partnerships.

Belleville Lake Fest Basket Raffle

Our newest fundraiser is the Belleville Lake Fest Basket Raffle.

The raffle basket will be displayed at the Belleville Masonic Temple during Lake Fest. Tickets are only $1 each and may be purchased in person during Lake Fest, online through Zeffy with a credit card, or through accepted cash-payment apps.

Every ticket purchased helps support our community programs and allows us to continue offering Fields of Honor events to veterans at no cost.

Coming Soon: Fly Fishing 101 for Veterans

We are excited to begin planning an upcoming Fly Fishing 101 experience for veterans.

This introductory program will provide veterans with an opportunity to learn basic fly-fishing skills, spend time outdoors, and enjoy another day of fellowship and connection.

Additional details will be announced as plans are finalized.

A Look Ahead at Fields of Honor

We have many new Fields of Honor experiences in development. Future veteran programs may include:

Herbal tea blending
Naturally fermented sodas
Food preservation and seasonal cooking
Wild plants and useful herbs
Foraging and nature education
Gardening and farmstead workshops
Outdoor recreation and skill-building activities

Each program is intended to create a welcoming environment where veterans can learn, relax, build friendships, and enjoy meaningful time in nature.

Thank You for Helping Us Grow

Fields of Honor and our developing student programs are made possible through the support of volunteers, donors, local organizations, businesses, and community members.

Whether you purchase a raffle ticket, attend a workshop, donate supplies, sponsor a veteran or student, or share information about our programs, you are helping create opportunities that make a real difference.

Together, we are growing stronger veterans, stronger students, stronger families, and a stronger community.
