How common are Tic Disorders, really? 👀

Dr. Kevin J. Black explores research suggesting that and Provisional are more common and longer-lasting than clinic-based studies indicate. Roughly half of children experience observable tics at some point during elementary school and at least 1 in 4 may meet criteria for a chronic Tic Disorder. Yet many never receive a diagnosis, and not all experience significant impairment.

How we understand Tic Disorder prevalence shapes research priorities and clinical discussions. Discover what a more complete picture reveals and why it matters.

“My name is Brycen, and I was diagnosed with Tourette’s when I was 9. I’m 30 years old now, and work at Google as a Senior Account Manager on our Large Customer Services Team. For work, I do a good amount of public speaking for a variety of business reasons. While I typically mention Tourette’s in my talks because I like being upfront about it, I recently gave a ‘Spark Talk’ at my vertical’s offsite with 100+ people entirely about my journey, and it was rather cathartic. My intention was to be motivational, and to teach others how you can use your experiences to lean on empathy as your strength in life and in business.

I did not initially intend to share this publicly, I just wanted to tell my story with the goal of motivating my team to find their strengths and use them to be the best versions of themselves. But I got enough positive feedback that I felt it might be worth sharing. I have done some mentorship with kids with Tourette’s in the past, but if I can be any form of role model in my adult life, it would be to others with TS to turn the fear, anxiety, and embarrassment of your condition to look deeply into how it can become the root of your strength.” – Brycen

Learn from Dr. Kevin J. Black about why and Provisional may be far more common and longer lasting than clinic-based samples suggest, and how biases shape our understanding of who , who gets noticed, and who is ultimately diagnosed. Dr. Black will share findings from population-based data, school observations, and the New Tics prospective cohort to show what a less biased picture looks like.
