For many people, the scale carries emotional weight far beyond numbers. Shame often replaces curiosity, making change harder instead of easier.

Shame never creates lasting change. Compassion and curiosity create room for care, dignity, and growth.

The voice you hear most often is your own.
Research on self-kindness shows that people who treat themselves with understanding during difficult moments tend to recover from setbacks more effectively than those who attack themselves with criticism.
Imagine speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you deeply love.
Because growth happens best when shame isn't driving the process.

What is one thing you need to hear from yourself?
Then pause long enough to actually hear the answer.

Rest Without Earning It

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that rest is something we have to deserve.

That we’ll slow down after we finish the to do list.
After we work harder.
After we prove we’ve done enough.

But rest isn’t a reward for being productive.

Rest is part of being human. It’s how we recharge, reconnect, and care for ourselves so we can continue showing up for the people and things that matter most.

This week, challenge yourself to take one small moment to pause, not because you’ve earned it, but because you need it.

Kindness includes giving yourself permission to rest.

Many people think of self-care as something extra, but it’s actually a core part of emotional health. Noticing how often — and how intentionally — we care for ourselves can reveal where we’re depleted.

Care isn’t selfish — it’s sustaining. Regular self-care supports emotional health and strengthens our ability to stay connected to others.

This week we’re celebrating Shayla Johnson, Resident Therapist and Operations Manager at Fuller Life Family Therapy.

Shayla believes that therapy is a journey of understanding, healing, and self-discovery. She creates a compassionate space where clients can decompress, gain insight, and uncover the strengths and wisdom that already exist within them. With a Master of Arts in Counseling, a Master of Divinity, and training in Art Therapy, she brings both clinical expertise and deep empathy to her work.

Whether she’s supporting clients through life’s challenges or helping our organization run smoothly behind the scenes, Shayla’s dedication to helping others live fuller, healthier lives shines through in everything she does.

Thank you, Shayla, for your heart for people, your commitment to growth, and the care you bring to our Fuller Life community every day. We’re grateful to have you on the team.

Join us in celebrating Shayla and the impact she makes on our clients, team, and community.

The hardest part of improving your relationship isn’t the conversation with your partner. It’s the one you have with yourself first.

Life moves fast, and your nervous system notices.

Between work, traveling, responsibilities, and trying to enjoy all the experiences life has to offer, it’s easy to forget how important the small habits are.

That’s why micro habits matter — getting sunlight, moving your body, resting, laughing, spending time with people you love, and finding small moments to reset along the way.

Life is going to keep moving, so it’s important to take care of yourself as you move with it.

Micro habits for self-care 🌿

• open the blinds first thing in the morning
• drink water before caffeine
• step outside for fresh air + sunlight
• stretch your body for a few minutes
• put your phone down before bed
• listen to music without multitasking
• text or call someone you love
• take deep breaths between tasks
• create small moments of rest throughout the day

What micro habit for self-care will you try today?

We live in a culture that glorifies constantly being busy,
productive,
and pushing through.

but self-care doesn’t always have to be expensive,
planned,
or far away.

it can simply be going to a park.

this year, I made it a goal to explore more parks and take 30-minute walks to support both my physical and mental health.

this in itself is self-care 🌿

below are some of our therapists’ favorite parks and peaceful spots around Houston to hopefully spark some inspiration for your own self-care.

• Margarita Castaneda, Administrative Director — Addicks Reservoir Park
• Shireen Rand, Graduate Therapist — Memorial Park (Eastern Glades)
• Shayla Johnson, Resident Therapist — Memorial Park
• Erin Viramontes, Resident Therapist — Hermann Park
• Jessica Coufal, Graduate Therapist — Hermann Park
• Gisselle Balderas, Resident Therapist — Oyster Creek Park

What park(s) will you check out to practice self-care?
