We were honored to help launch Firefly yesterday. This boat, built by lyman_morse for our friends at upstreamalliance, is breaking technological barriers with first of its kind battery-powered propulsion. Firefly will undoubtedly inspire wonder and stewardship as she fulfills her mission to serve as a floating classroom on the Delaware River. Fair winds and following seas!

Join Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper Executive Director Pete Nichols, as he hosts a panel with guests Kyla Bennet from Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), Stephen Miller with Islesboro Islands Trust, and Scott Sells a Clean Water Act attorney to discuss the past battles and future opportunities to protect Sears Island, an ecologically significant and one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal islands on the Eastern Seaboard.

JOIN US for the launch of Firefly - a solar-electric catamaran custom built by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding for environmental education commissioned by our friends at the Upstream Alliance.

Monday, August 3 | 4 - 6 PM
Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, 84 Knox Street, Thomaston.

Based in the mid-Atlantic, Upstream Alliance's mission is to provide powerful, on-the-water experiences for conservation leaders who can improve public access, clean water and coastal resilience, while in partnership with organizations who champion these issues.

Firefly, built in our own backyard by our neighbors and expert craftsman at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, is a fully electric, 49-foot catamaran custom designed for on the water engagement and education. Upstream Alliance, who we know through past collaborations, has invited us to co-sponsor this exciting event as the local conservation partner.

A little breezy but otherwise a wonderful morning out sampling water quality in Camden Harbor with the Maine Coastal Observing Alliance (MCOA)! We sample at four sites from outside the harbor to up near the falls for common water quality parameters, including clarity, salinity, nutrients, etc. Results will be available after we get our lab reports and perform quality control.

Pictured are crew Seth Walton - Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper, Celeste Mosher - MCOA water quality technician and scientist extraordinaire, and Alison McKellar - former Camden Select Board member and tireless water quality advocate.

Waterkeepers are fighting rollbacks to the Clean Water Act!

Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper is focused on grassroots efforts to protect and improve water quality in our local communities, but we are so fortunate to be able to call upon the strength and wisdom of the Waterkeeper Alliance and all 300 Waterkeepers across the globe to tackle national and international issues.

As the Clean Water Act is mercilessly gutted at the federal level, we look forward to implementing strategies here in Maine to fill in gaps and stand up for clean waters at the state level. Read more here: https://waterkeeper.org/protecting-clean-water/
