For the past nine years, The B Foundation has awarded a $1000 renewable scholarship to a graduating Belding High School senior who is planning to pursue a career in a health or medical related field.

This year’s recipient is Isabel Thompson.

Isabel plans to study nursing, with a goal to specialize in oncology. In her application she wrote, “Watching my Dad battle cancer for ten years was such an inspiration. He would always come home from treatment and rave about how nice his nurses were. Hearing him say this made me want to become a nurse of oncology. When my Dad died in 2021, I promised myself I would help patients the way nurses helped him.”

Congratulations Isabel! We are certain you will be an amazing oncology nurse, and will have a positive impact on so many lives.

This reel is seven years old today, but its message still holds true. Belding is a small town with a huge, generous heart.

Our guest speaker at this year’s Gala was Bree Town-Teegardin.

Bree, a three time cancer survivor, shared her emotional story about being first diagnosed as an 8 year old, spending a year in the hospital, receiving a bone marrow transplant after her second diagnosis at age 10, then being diagnosed yet again with a different form of cancer at the age of 21.

She shared the physical and emotional struggles of going through treatment, losing a friend who was diagnosed at the same time she was, and dealing with long term effects of cancer. She also talked about the toll it took on her family, “….because cancer doesn’t affect just one person - it affects entire families.”

“We relied on our community in ways I don’t think we ever could have imagined. Friends, family, neighbors, people from our church…even people we didn’t know stepped in to support us. They showed up for us in big ways and small ways - when things felt overwhelming, and when we needed help the most.”

She reminded everyone why their support at the Gala and of the B Foundation was so important.

“Because when a family hears the words ‘you have cancer’ everything changes, and in that moment, knowing your community is standing behind you can mean everything. So being here tonight…this matters. It matters to families who are in the middle of the fight right now. It matters to people who love them, and it will matter to the next person in this community who needs help and hope.”

While we’re on the subject of giving thanks, we’d like to give a shout out to all our student volunteers, as well as Miss Belding and her court. They all helped with set up and tear down for the Gala, made sure tables were cleared during dinner, and also assisted with auctions. They worked hard and did a fantastic job for us. Thank you all!
