Update: The total was $697.64.

This boy needs a name starting with W. Bring on the suggestions!

There was a huge abscess pocket that extended quite a way up his broken leg. This made the amputation surgery more difficult and time consuming, as the dead tissue needed to be debrided. His chance of post-surgical infection is also higher than usual, but he is on antibiotics. The puncture on his other leg also needed cleaning but is expected to heal without issue.

Thank you again to Dr Fent and EVI, and Julie Nighswander for getting this cat to help! He was in a lot of pain and scared, making him difficult to trap.

This friendly neighborhood stray was attacked, likely by a dog. He has a fractured, badly infected, left leg and a puncture wound on his right leg.

This poor kitty needs surgery ASAP. Fortunately, Dr Fent is doing it at The Economic Veterinary Initiative , so the cost will be lower than at a typical vet. He will be neutered and vaccinated at the same time.

UPDATE - RIP, nameless beauty

We had hoped the eyes were her only problem, but the cause of her blindness was killing her. She had a huge squamous cell carcinoma filling her mouth and nasal passages and putting pressure on her eyes.

She was once loved by someone. She had a brand-name expensive flea collar. Perhaps as her blindness progressed, she wandered away from home and was lost. She had no microchip.

Sometime the only help we can give is a release from pain. Thank you for your donations.

This poor cat was just picked up and is on her way to get medical care. Kitten season has our resources stretched to the breaking point. Please help if you can!

Donations needed! Again 🫣

Words are hard on the best of days but I think everyone can agree that cutting a ball of hair, fleas, and dirt off of the knotted together umbilical cords of three kittens is not a good day.

It took over an hour with three people carefully assessing each cut to get close to freeing them, plus 10 more minutes of soaking the remaining clump of dirty matted hair in betadine to free the first kitten. He was in the best shape you could hope for having been literally tied to his siblings and untended by Mom for many hours.

I don't even remember the details of assessing and splitting the last two kittens apart but my heart fell seeing that even with our best efforts to protect the umbilical cords one of the cords had been tugged too hard. We carefully cleaned the umbilical site with more betadine and sent photos for assessment by professionals. The three siblings, 2 boys and a girl, have joined their brother who thankfully didn't need to be untangled, with a bottle feeder for the night.

There's so many lessons we can take from today, use a higher table, mix more milk up, breathe, always keep an extra and clean pair of nail clippers on hand, don't forget to use the Capstar early in the process, sanitize your heating pad before the new kittens arrive. 🙃 However the two things sticking with me tonight are how lucky we are to have the people and skills to safely free these babies and that you can't ever have enough kitten formula.

Which brings me to what we need, Kitten Milk Replacer or KMR. The generous donations from 8 days ago are already being put to use but even the 5lb bag of KMR will only last us two to three weeks, and that was before we added 4 more hungry mouths. Newborn kittens usually drink about 2 mls every 2 hours but these 4 drank about 35 MLS in one feeding! 🫣 Hungry babies!

We need donations for an emergency surgery!

This sweet young man is Papa and he needs your help.

We think he was hit by a slow moving vehicle while trying to escape a fight with a cat who was chasing him. His caretaker knew something wasn't right with him and reached out in a panic. A trip to MedVet for triage turned into a $621.54 bill for pain meds, an exam, and x-rays.

His X-ray results show that Papa has a diaphragmatic hernia, the muscle separating his chest cavity from his abdomen is torn allowing the abdominal organs to be pushed into his chest cavity. This is a very painful and dangerous condition and Care Center reassured us that euthanasia is a valid option. 😭

But by a stroke of luck the amazing Dr. Fent is doing surgery today and has experience with the repair Papa needs and is willing to work him into her surgery schedule.

But now we need donations to pay for his care. Today was already an expensive surgery day with Mama Kali receiving her double enucleation (cost covered by your donations, thank you so much!! 🥳), a charity leg amputation and spay for a stray Female who will now be an indoor only lady of leisure and well as multiple other charity spays and neuters.

Kitten season doesn't just mean cute fuzzy babies. Every year we see a slew of emergency cases that leave us scrambling to arrange fosters, Dr 's appointments, emergency transportation and manage ALL the cat chaos you can imagine, but we can't do it without your help.

Blind Mama Kali's kittens need names

Mama K's name is now Kali! We tried to name her Klair, for Klairvoyant, but somehow we kept calling her Kali, so, Kali it is!

Kali was examined by the MedVet ophthalmologist, Dr Kuonen, on Friday. She said Kali has no vision in either eye, and recommends that what remains of her eyes be removed. Kali will have surgery tomorrow.

Meanwhile, her kittens, one boy and one girl, need names starting with the letter K!

Mama K update coming soon but first Daquiri!

Daquiri has made so much progress this past week. She has grown from being a little girl who was terrified into a sweetheart who is able to forget her fear and sprawl out during a good nap.

She is getting braver by the day and even had a sneaky play session with a resident cat at her foster home, she snuck out of her room and the resident kitty loves new playmates. 🥰

I was reminded today, during a session with the National Kitten Coalition Kitten Conference how important it is to remember who you are trying to socialize. The community cats that survive outside are the cautious, intelligent, observant cats and because females can become pregnant at 4 months old (spay and neuter every kitten!) the female cat's prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain that processes self control and risk vs reward decisions - develops much much younger than in a male cat. That can mean that the smartest kitties are also going to be the most reserved and the hardest to socialize - and frequently female, like our Daquiri.

She came to us at about 12 weeks old, already old enough to be hard to socialize, but also part of a group of 6 kittens brought in together. It was easy for her to fade into the background of the chaos and she was smart enough to take advantage of her siblings lack of fear.

She is still concerned about hands - and why they keep coming near her - but now she will happily snuggle in with her current foster mom for an unreserved nap. Her belly is frequently showing and it isn't a trap 😍. She loves ear rubs and chin scratches, except for seeing those pesky hands.

We think it's time to start looking for the right home for her 🥳 but it's going to need to be with a patient family that understands her needs. She needs a slow introduction to the household with careful efforts to build trust before expecting her to be willing to interact with her people. Once she trusts you she will be a sweet and talkative companion, a perfect candidate for training to use talking buttons and do tricks.

We started kitten season with a stock-pile of KMR. It is early June, and we are out!

Here are some of the bottle babies being fed right now.

We use primarily the powder form of KMR. A 5-lb bag or two would be wonderful for our primary bottle feeder. The 12 oz and 28 oz sizes are perfect for single kittens or to hand out to people needing emergency supplies.
