Message for 8th grade confirmation retreat Saturday October 3.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to welcome your teens to our Confirmation Retreat this Saturday! We are looking forward to a fun and meaningful day of community, prayer, and preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

For students who are being dropped off individually rather than arriving by bus, please plan to arrive by around 9:45AM.
When you arrive at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, please enter through the main entrance and follow the signs for the Cardinal Great Hall. Our team will be available to welcome students and direct them to the registration area.
Students will check in, receive a name tag with their assigned table number, and join the other retreat participants.

We look forward to seeing your students on Saturday!

How Pope Gregory fixed the calendar

The calendar on your wall is the Gregorian calendar, and it was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to fix a tiny 11-minute mistake in the older Julian calendar.

The Julian Calendar was Created by Julius Caesar, a Roman leader, way back in 45 BC. Caesar thought a year was exactly 365 and a quarter days long. The Julian calendar had 365 days in a regular year and added a leap year (an extra day in February) every four years.

But Earth actually takes a tiny bit less time—about 11 minutes less—to travel all the way around the Sun. 11 minutes doesn't sound like much, but over hundreds of years, those extra minutes added up to whole missing days. By the 1500s, the calendar was off by 10 days, meaning spring and important holidays like Easter were happening at the wrong time.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII used math from smart astronomers to fix the mistake. To catch up the 10 missing days, people went to sleep on Thursday, October 4th, and woke up the next morning on Friday, October 15th!

To stop the calendar from getting messed up again, the Pope changed the leap year rules. Century years (like 1700 or 1900) would not be leap years anymore, unless they could be divided evenly by 400 (like the year 2000).

The Gregorian calendar is super accurate and matches the Earth's trip around the Sun almost perfectly, which is why most of the world uses it today.
