FYI Voucher Program Awareness Meeting
The meeting focused on discussing the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) voucher program with a group of Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members. Chad and Deanna presented information about the program, which is a HUD housing voucher for young people aging out of foster care. They noted that the program is underutilized, with $25 million left unspent last year, partly due to lack of awareness among housing authorities. The presentation aimed to raise awareness among community organizations across the state and gather feedback on how to promote the program effectively.
Chad and Deanna discussed the expanded eligibility for HUD vouchers for former foster youth, noting that anyone who spent even one day in foster care, regardless of age or state, is now eligible until age 25. They highlighted that this change was recently discovered and may not have been well publicized. The discussion also covered statistics about foster care in Nebraska, including the fact that only 13 vouchers have been used since 2019, which they plan to use when presenting to community organizations to raise awareness about the program.
Huge shout out to Chad and Deanna for putting this on for us!!!
