Baytown Historical Preservation Association "Collecting Yesterday for Tomorrow" www.baytownhistory.org

The historic 1894 one-room Wooster School and 1910 Brown-McKay House located at the Republic of Texas Plaza Park, 5117 North Main Street in Baytown, are preserved and interpreted by BHPA. Visitors experience rural life in a rice farming community that existed before the discovery of oil and the subsequent industrialization of the area. BHPA is enhancing this experience by the addition of a post and beam barn that will house farm implements and a display on rice farming.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eddie V. Gray, a remarkable man and cherished community leader, who was a Lifetime member of the BHPA.

He was passionate about our local history and loved to talk about it, as you can see from this photo of him speaking at the Texas State Historical Marker Dedication for the City of Pelly in 2023.

Mr. Gray’s vision, commitment, and tireless efforts to make Baytown a better place have left a lasting legacy. His contributions will be remembered with deep gratitude, and his impact on our community will never be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to his family during this difficult time.

UPDATE: The tree has been removed to make way for the little Highlands Library’s new home. The rain is still causing problems with preparing the ground and the actual move. We will keep you posted when we have a tentative date.

If you are looking for a special Father’s Day gift, stop by the Republic of Texas Plaza today from 1 pm to 3 pm! We have copies of the “Houston North Shore Railway” book, still wrapped in cellophane, for $20. The late Charles P. DeVerter II, who coauthored this book, became interested in the railroads at an early age. He grew up in Baytown in the Humble Oil & Refining Co.'s company housing. His home was only one block from the Humble track, which connected the refinery with the docks. The Houston North Shore was four blocks away from his home. We also have other gift items, and our historic buildings will be open during this time. Come see us!

On this Memorial Day, let us take a moment to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and way of life. We are so indebted to our armed forces and their families who “gave all.”
