🎉 Congratulations to the participants of the first Ticitl (doula) Ancestral Knowledge Certification. We also extend our gratitude to NJBEFA for supporting and making this process of training and community strengthening possible.

This project is designed to build infrastructure and protection for traditional knowledge passed down by our grandmothers wisdom that continues to sustain the physical, mental, and spiritual health of our communities.

Public health evidence shows that human connection is a key determinant of well-being: it regulates stress, strengthens the immune system, and supports mental health. Longitudinal studies such as the Harvard Study of Adult Development confirm that the quality of relationships is one of the strongest predictors of health and longevity, with higher survival rates among individuals with strong social bonds. From Attachment Theory, human contact physical, emotional, and social, is recognized as a fundamental regulator of human development and emotional stability.

This program is intended to complement, not replace, institutional healthcare systems, promoting collaboration and mutual respect between traditional knowledge systems and conventional medicine.

I was born in Veracruz. My mother, my godmother, and the grandmothers in my community taught me to listen to the earth, to respect people, and to preserve the good things passed down from our ancestors. As a child, I witnessed the planting and harvesting of corn, beans, squash, and fruit trees, as well as the preparation of chocolate and bread in adobe ovens, among many other things. I listened to stories that still speak to me in my memories.

Life took me down paths I did not always choose: I married, had children, and crossed borders. Everything I learned, everything I am, lives on in my children and within our community.

Today, as President and one of the first certified in ancestral Ticitl (Doula) knowledge, I care for and share these teachings so they may bring strength, healing, and guidance to those who need them. I create spaces to talk, to listen, and to seek solutions together for what pains us: families who are struggling, women who are suffering, and our communities striving to live with dignity.

Every step I take is guided by those who entrusted us with these practices, by the earth, and by respect for what belongs to us. Our work is to protect life, memory, and culture, just as the generations before me did, and as the generations after me will continue to do.

My name is Ana Lilia Lorenzo Varela. I am from México-Tenochtitlán. I would like to express my gratitude to Xochiquetzal Council for the Certification in Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl (Doula) for allowing me to be part of this project.

For me, it was a very beautiful experience to share with each one of you and to learn from you what we already carry within us, through the knowledge of our grandmothers. In Mexico and here, I have supported postpartum care by preparing herbal baths for family members and friends. I have a deep appreciation for plant medicine.

I also learned new techniques that I did not know before. Thank you, Xochiquetzal Council.✨💕🪴🌻🌷🌱🪻

My name is Yadira Angulo Alemán. I was born in Mexico City; my father is originally from the Mixteca region of Puebla, and my mother is from the state of Veracruz.

I am grateful to Xochiquetzalli Council Inc. for the opportunity to participate in this Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl (Doula) certification. Through this course, I was able to awaken within myself—at a deep level—the knowledge that my mother, our grandmothers, and the community where I grew up practiced, and that in my youth I did not value as I do now.

What I appreciated most about this course is that it does not “sell” ancestral wisdom, but rather guides you, step by step, so that you can reconnect with the practices that have existed within our families and communities for generations.

Hello, my name is Meyolotzin Miriam Abrajan-Mani, daughter of parents who migrated to the United States in the 1980s, carrying countless dreams and ancestral knowledge…

I want to express my gratitude to all my compañeras for accompanying me throughout the Ancestral Knowledge course. But I especially want to thank Quetziquetl Angulo for taking the time to organize, structure, and bring these awakenings within us to life. Through these courses, I was able to rediscover the potential within our traditions and recognize that each of us carries medicine and healing knowledge. That we are capable of guiding and caring for our communities through touch, word, and tradition. These courses have helped cultivate new beginnings for me, both personally and professionally. I hope in the near future to bring my learning to everyone who needs it, with visibility, equity, empathy, and love.

My name is:
Maria Romero, and I am originally from Veracruz, Mexico.

My paternal great-grandmother was a healer, and my maternal grandmother practiced ancestral medicine. The knowledge I carry in my memory was shared by my grandmothers and was only practiced sparingly in my past.

Xochiquetzal Council and its wonderful Ancestral Knowledge Certification program helped refresh my memory and recover those recipes and healing methods that have been used for many years.

To reclaim, honor, and redirect ancestral knowledge so that our descendants can continue benefiting from it.

From our Mother Earth to our hands, for the care of mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Thank you, Xochiquetzal Council.

My name is Laura, and I am very happy to have taken this Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl (Doula) course led by Quetziquetl because I learned so much—from the simplicity of care and support to sobadas, herbal rubs, and traditional closings hips. It was powerful to recognize that these practices have always been with us, passed down from grandmothers to mothers to daughters.

I am also deeply grateful for each of the women who were part of the group, as there was such a beautiful energy among us—through conversations, laughter, and shared learning.

I just want to thank Quetzi once again for creating these kinds of spaces. I am taking with me an incredible experience.

My name is Jazmín Pérez Fernández, and I would like to express my deep gratitude to Xochiquetzal Council and to Quetzi for inviting me to be part of this first cohort of the Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl program.

Through this course, we shared and reflected on the ways our mothers and ancestors have traditionally cared for the body, and how this knowledge continues to live within us.

Quetzi guided us in understanding that our knowledge is essential in providing dignified care, both for our communities and for ourselves. I also learned the importance of valuing and honoring this work. One of the most meaningful realizations for me was recognizing that I carry a great deal of wisdom within, and that it is important to continue sharing it so that our communities, families, and we ourselves may flourish.

I relearned ancestral techniques such as friegas (traditional rubbing therapies) and sobadas (therapeutic bodywork), especially for pregnant people, as well as tools for full-spectrum support. These classes felt like conversations among family, where recipes, methods, and practices were shared, just as my aunts and grandmothers once did.

Thank you, Quetzi, for your invaluable sharing and for the work you do in the community.

Hello! My name is Claudia Martinez. I took the Certificación de Saberes Ancestrales Ticitl course with Quetziquetl Angulo, and I am very grateful for a course like this.

Quetzi not only taught us from her wide knowledge, she guided us in such a special way and showed us how we also carry this knowledge within ourselves. I have taken other courses, and although all of them have left me something positive, this course taught me why I chose this path as a doula/Ticitl.

Aside from being an educational space where we shared laughter and tears, it was a space where I felt held, respected, and heard by Quetzi and by my classmates. This course taught me how the power of our ancestral knowledge is very necessary in today’s world. It not only heals us physically and spiritually, but it also teaches us to work in community.

It definitely keeps us connected to a greater essence. Without a doubt, it was a course that marked my path as a Ticitl.

Thank you, Quetziquetl.

Seguimos.
