Ozzy's version of "duck lips."
Ozzy wants to remind anyone asking us for wildlife help to be prepared to secure the turtle/goose/opossum etc as it is impossible for any of us to get to an accident scene quickly enough the majority of the time--when we do it is only because we already happened to be in the given area. The consequences of no action by finders on the spot carry seriously high mortality rate. So if you want animals to have their best chances, please, we are begging, be willing to stay onscene for an hour + (yes, we are BUSY) or go hands on and secure the animal using the creativity we know you have.
Just this week we've had volunteers disrupt their lives to check on reported wildlife that didn't exist/weren't relocated or were dead on arrival which is incredibly frustrating as you can imagine. The poor likelihood of rescue is compounded by inadequate directions, no GPS pin and zero pictures. Providing these details are essential and things you can do to improve an animal's chances of rescue.
Seriously immobilized wildlife left roadside can have far better chances if people follow these steps:
Pin the location with your GPS or use very specific details (an actual address, cardinal directions, key "monuments")
Put the animal in your car on the spot--small mammals, birds and turtles who have just been injured and were immobile enough for you to grab are typically easy riders on the floorboard of your car
Stop treating A.S.K. like we're a team of 100 on-call volunteers 24/7. The same people who rehab the wildlife are the same people who are capturing the majority of the wildlife. We can't do both nonstop and we need to make that clear.
