Rooted in culture. United in freedom. ❤️‍🔥

2026 Battle Creek Juneteenth Family Day Celebration was an amazing moment to collectively celebrate the liberation of slaves in the U.S. From helping plan to tabling for this event, it is truly amazing watching it come to life. Happy Juneteenth BC community!

Congratulations again to our Juneteenth 2026 High School Essay Contest winners Esther, Stella, Dwayne, and Nae’Ary!😁

Announcing our 2026 Juneteenth High School Essay Contest winners! ❤️💛💚

For this year’s prompt we asked students to reflect on what or who in their culture has had a significant impact on their understanding of freedom, and how that helps them connect to the people around them. 🙃

We are overjoyed with all the wisdom and effort that our 4 winners put into their essays. Congratulations Esther Lian, Stella Benson, Dwayne White, and Nae’Ary Wilson!

We are proud of our BC youth!

Congratulations to Esther Lian, our first place winner! 🥇

From Lakeview High School, Esther inspired us with this quote: “The freedoms I enjoy now did not appear out of nowhere. They were shaped by generations before me.”

Congratulations to Stella Benson, our 2nd place tie winner! 🥈

From Lakeview High School, Stella inspired us with this quote: “To me, freedom is being able to become, to grow without fear or guilt, to speak, and to realize being who you are is not something to apologize for, it is deliverance.”

Congratulations to Dwayne White, our 2nd place tie winner! 🥈

From Lakeview High School, Dwayne inspired us with this quote: “... freedom is not only something fought for, but it’s something passed down. And the way you honor it is by choosing to uplift others.”

Congratulations to Nae’Ary Wilson, our 3rd place winner! 🥉

From Battle Creek Central, Nae’Ary inspired us with this quote: “Earning freedom not only means that the chains are removed, but that individuals are provided with the opportunity to obtain dignity, enjoy life with a purpose of living, and invest in their future self’s.”

A 16-year-old boy was detained while walking home in Washington Heights. He did nothing wrong. He recorded it. The bodycam confirmed it.

When asked to explain, the officer said that in Washington Heights, grabbing your crotch is reason enough to assume someone has a firearm.

That is not a judgment about one teen. That is a judgment about an entire neighborhood. About the people who live there. About who gets to walk home without being treated as a suspect.

This is racial bias. And it causes real harm. To that young man. To his family. To every person in that community who now has even more reason not to trust the people who are supposed to protect them.

To our community: What does accountability look like to you? What do you need to feel heard, seen, and safe?

To the Battle Creek Police Department: How do you ensure every officer treats every person, in every neighborhood, with dignity and care?

These are not rhetorical questions. They deserve real answers.

A Battle Creek teenager's video of him being detained by police while walking down the street is going viral and sparking a conversation with city leaders.
