United States Catholic Conference of Bishop s Issue "Special Message" on Immigration

This week, the USCCB issued this "Special Message" and launched the "You are Not Alone" initiative to provide support, accompaniment, pastoral care and public witness and advocacy.

We oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement.

We pray that the Lord may guide the leaders of our nation, and we are grateful for past and present opportunities to dialogue with the public and elected officials. In this dialogue, we will continue to advocate for meaningful immigration reform.

The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops express their gratitude to the Governor, Senate President Cameron Henry, Speaker of the House Philip Devillier and the Louisiana State Legislature for their leadership to provide SNAP benefits for the most vulnerable.

LCCB strongly advocated during the Special Session and affirms their leadership. Not many states have this. It is this kind of bipartisan leadership that focuses on the most vulnerable that will serve the common good of all Louisianians.

“Our Church mourns the terrible suffering of Christians and other innocent victims of violence in Gaza and surrounding areas who are struggling to survive, protect their children, and live with dignity in dire conditions,” continued Archbishop Broglio. “The Holy Father continues to call for a cease fire and for aid to enter the territory, noting with great sorrow that ‘Gaza is starving,’

Yesterday, LCCB provided a pastoral reflection on the current immigration enforcement impact of families and proposed solutions through legislation.

This bipartisan bill establishes what it calls "The Dignity Program," which would grant some unauthorized immigrants who came to the U.S. prior to 2021 the ability to apply for up to seven years of legal status with work authorization.

"Bipartisan collaboration is not only possible, it's absolutely necessary," Bishop Seitz said. We have an opportunity to create dialogue for the common good and reason on how to change the immigration laws.

Sue Weishar and Fr. Augustine from St. Anthony of Padua were witnesses of love.

Yesterday LCCB addressed the Health Disparities in Rural Areas Task Force of the Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana is sick. Our health outcomes are the poorest in the nation.

LCCB testified that a main driver is deep poverty and provided a solution framework using social determinants of health the the Empowering Families to Live Well Act.

Louisiana Catholic Bishops Address Recent Immigration Enforcement Actions

"No one can turn a deaf ear to the palpable cries of anxiety and fears heard throughout our communities in Louisiana in the wake of a surge in immigration enforcement actions."
