We write as shepherds entrusted with the care of souls and with promoting the dignity of every human person. Guided by the Gospel, the Catholic Church’s teaching that all life is sacred from conception to natural death, and concern for human dignity and care for the vulnerable.

As Catholics, we believe in the God-given dignity of every human life, from conception until natural death. Every abortion ends the life of an unborn child, but the widespread availability of abortion pills also raises serious concerns for the health and well-being of women.

The removal of safeguards that once required an in-person visit with a physician means that women may obtain these drugs without an examination to determine the length of pregnancy or to rule out conditions such as an ectopic pregnancy. The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops has written to U.S. Attorney General Blanche to expedite the safety review as soon as possible.

The State of Louisiana has estimated in pleadings in the Louisiana v. FDA case that 870 chemical abortions occur each month.[1] That amounts to the deliberate death of more than 10,000 living humans each year in Louisiana.

Catholic Social Teaching continues to guide all our work at the State Capitol. LCCB achieved some of its priorities but were challenged in other areas. The session was dominated by budget cuts and redistricting racial divides.

We were able to regain autonomy in prekindergarten programs but no new funding for GATOR causing sustainability challenges.

Bills to regulate artificial intelligence and carbon capture failed, increase in minimum wage bills failed, bills to protect churches from disruptors passed, bills to reclassify those on death row with an intellectual disability failed but a bill to add a new crime for homelessness passed.

At the Capitol This Week Ending May 9, 2026: Enlivening Public Policy with Catholic Social Teaching

Restorative justice
Ethical organ donation protections
Scholarships for low-income families
Compassionate response to homelessness

This week at the Louisiana Capitol, we advocated for policies rooted in human dignity, justice, and compassion.

We supported restorative justice for those still imprisoned under unconstitutional nonunanimous jury verdicts, urged strong ethical protections in organ donation, and lifted up the voices of low-income families who rely on Catholic education scholarships.

We also worked to oppose the criminalization of homelessness and sought protections for non profits that provide access to basic needs like food, medical care, and disaster response.

Not every effort succeeded, but our mission remains the same: to serve the common good and stand with the most vulnerable.

This week, the USCCB issued this "Special Message" and launched the "You are Not Alone" initiative to provide support, accompaniment, pastoral care and public witness and advocacy.

We oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement.

We pray that the Lord may guide the leaders of our nation, and we are grateful for past and present opportunities to dialogue with the public and elected officials. In this dialogue, we will continue to advocate for meaningful immigration reform.

We oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement.

The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops express their gratitude to the Governor, Senate President Cameron Henry, Speaker of the House Philip Devillier and the Louisiana State Legislature for their leadership to provide SNAP benefits for the most vulnerable.

LCCB strongly advocated during the Special Session and affirms their leadership. Not many states have this. It is this kind of bipartisan leadership that focuses on the most vulnerable that will serve the common good of all Louisianians.
