Who Can Enter? Morehouse students in grades 6th-8th and grades 9th - 12th. Girls and boys entering the 6th grade in August are considered "6th graders" for this contest. Equally, students entering the 9th grade in August are considered "9th graders".
Essay Topics: Choose ONE of these topics:
* What Freedom Means to You
* What It Means to Be An American.
Essay Requirements:
* Essay must be 500 to 750 words
* Essay must be typed
* Essay CAN NOT be AI generated
* Include the following information at the bottom of the essay
- Student's Name
- Age and Grade
- Phone Number
- Parent(s) Name(s)
Deadline: All essays are to be received by the Bastrop Morehouse Chamber of Commerce no later than Friday, June 19, 2026

Judging: Winning essays will be selected by a committee formed by the Chamber of Commerce
Prizes:
* Two winners will be selected:
- One winner from grades 6th-8th
- One winner from grades 9th-12th
* $250 cash prize! Winners will be announced on our
page during the week of July 4, 2026
Special Recognition:
* The winners and their parents will be honored guests at the
Annual Legislative Luncheon on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at
11:30 at the Bastrop Visitor Center. At the luncheon,
winners will receive their prize money and have the
opportunity to share their winning essays with attendees
