Today was our first bike bus of the new school year. It is the second day of school.

I didn't really expect that many people to show up this week because I figured everyone was still getting into the new school routine.

I was so wrong.

We had a huge turnout for the kickoff to the school year and it's just about the best feeling every single Wednesday. The new faces, the new bikes, the new wheelies somebody has learned over the summer. There is just a feeling of pure joy when you're a kid on a bike.

As we turned onto Ash Street at the start of our route, and as the iconic "Jolene" by Dolly Parton played on the speakers, a woman ran out to meet us in the street.

"We just moved here! How do we join the Bike Bus?!!"

"Come to the ballfields every Wednesday. 7:30am!"

And off she went, and away we went. Kids smiling, some broadly and others ever so slightly. Like the feeling of your hand out a car window weaving in and out of the wind. You can't help but smiling.

People are always saying they want a community. I've always said community is only going to be as good as what you give. Bike Bus is a great example of what we can all give back to the community. In the form of cycling education. In the form of a fitter youth. In the form of our local residents getting the biggest smile of their day at 7:41am when our group of happy kids rolls on by their front porch.

It all counts. It all matters.

The downside to summer being almost over...is that summer is almost over...

The upside though is that we're back to school next week and that means...BIKE BUS IS BACK!!!

We'll be at the Bar Harbor ballfields at 7:30am each Wednesday until it's so cold everyone stops showing up! For the new kids coming into their first bike bus experience we just ask a few things:

1. Be able to start and stop on your own. We have a few turns and and stop signs and every riders should be able to start and stop without falling over.

2. Everyone needs a helmet. If you don't have a helmet...we'll find you one!

3. If you really want to do Bike Bus...but don't have a bike??? Send me a message or email ([email protected]) and we'll see if we can round up a bike for you.

4. Do you have to live in town to participate? No. Actually, as it turns out most of the regulars live in Bar Harbor but not in the village. We load up our bikes and helmets each Wednesday to a bike rack and meet at the kids and parents that ride in to meet us at the ballfields. Some parents drop their kids off with their bikes and head off to work. Some parents stay and ride to school with us. All options work great!

5. We stay off the sidewalks and we bike as a group from point to point. We stay to the right side of the road, yield to oncoming traffic and we ride aware of everyone around us in the group. Getting from point A to point B safely is our #1 priority and a lesson within Bike Bus each week so the children learn to navigate the streets safely so they can be more independent on a bicycle as they grow older.

6. Music is a big part of Bike Bus and we'll play songs the kids love and current and requested. But mostly...we'll be teaching the kids about some of the greatest bands with a different artist playlist each week. As many of us are parents in our 40's...that means a heavy dose of 90's bands and we will be blasting some classics unapologetically all morning!

We are always looking for some crossing guards if anyone has Wednesdays free and want to help. Even a random Wednesday is all you have available, it's helpful. Just show up and we'll give you a reflective vest.

The route is only a mile and takes less than ten minutes to get there. It's not a long ride but Spring street is a long uphill for the little ones. Feel free to meet us along the course if that is easier, or meet up when you are ready.

For the parents that ride to the school with the Bike Bus...we usually ride back to the ballfields together as most of us are off to work after that. Which...as much as the Bike Bus is fun...the parents ride back is also a really great time, short as it is!

You are invited to join our final Bike Bus ride of the school year on Wednesday, June 10. Arrival is scheduled around 7:30 AM, with a safety briefing at 7:40 AM, then we ride to school.

Our goal= 100 participants 🚲
