Myrtlewood Montessori Academy

Myrtlewood Montessori Academy The development of Myrtlewood Montessori Academy Public Charter School is in its infancy. It will take many hearts and hands to make this dream a reality.

About Us:

Vision

The vision of Myrtlewood Montessori Academy is to create a positive and empowering learning environment committed to academic excellence, environmental awareness, and fostering a life-long love for learning in our students. It is our hope to be able to provide a high quality, alternative educational opportunity to families on the Southern Oregon Coast according to the philosoph

y and practices of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952). Environmental awareness and sustainability will be a significant part of the curriculum, including an advanced marine education curriculum designed and implemented in harmony with the Montessori philosophy. The students and staff of MMA will not only have an opportunity to interact with scientists and environmental education specialists from local agencies, but be able to put the information in context, as field trips to various habitats will be a significant part of the learning process. At MMA, there will be an emphasis on local, organic, and sustainable agriculture. Students will have an opportunity to grow food in a school garden, learn the benefits of returning sources of carbon and nitrogen in food and other plant-based wastes to the earth, and be exposed to the logistics of a sustainable agricultural operation both at school and at local farms. Students will flourish in a courteous and collaborative environment where the disciplines are integrative and personalized and where they will learn by doing rather than by watching. We are hoping to open in the Port Orford/Langlois 2CJ school district in the Fall of 2012. Depending on enrollment, we plan to initially serve grades k-5 with the goal of eventually serving students k-8. We are also investigating the possibility that we will be able to provide transportation in order reach out to more communities on the southern coast.

Well, I am giving the federal charter school grant one more go. After over a year of negotiating (well, 6 months of extremely sparse communication and then just over 6 months of negotiating), we have nearly finally reached the point of signing the contract with the district. As I review the comments from the reviewers of the grant we submitted last year, it deeply saddens me to see that, in this assessment-obsessed age, we even lost valuable points for not having a plan to quantify "artistic expression" in a more rigorous manner. Public education, taking the creativity out of life one percentage point at a time. I hope that when Myrtlewood Montessori is up and running, they can find a way to strike a balance between keeping keeping the test-obsessed happy and authentic, joyful learning.

A poignant reflection on the growing problems with public education...

All around this country, families are trying to figure out why their small children already dread going to a place that was supposed to serve as a gentle transition to formal learning.
