Maryland’s barn quilt trails bring vibrant quilt-pattern art to rural landscapes, celebrating the state’s agricultural and cultural heritage through colorful painted quilt squares mounted on barns and buildings. These trails link historic farms, community stories, and local artistry while honoring traditions rooted in quilting and folk expression. Trails in places like Carroll County and Harford County highlight the beauty and history of Maryland’s countryside, inviting people to explore rural landmarks and the landscapes that shaped them.

The historic Brewer Hill Cemetery in Annapolis, established in the 1880s as the city’s oldest African American burial ground, is receiving focused preservation support through state funding for conservation work.

The upcoming project includes mapping the site, removing invasive vegetation, conserving markers and masonry, improving drainage, and adding fencing and signage to care for the resting place of generations of Black community members, including enslaved people and others with powerful local histories. This effort aims to honor and protect a site that holds deep cultural significance and stories of Maryland’s past.

The Southern Maryland National Heritage Area has launched a Heritage Passport Program that invites visitors to explore the region’s history by collecting stamps at participating historic sites, museums, and cultural destinations. The passport program connects stories from Revolutionary War and Civil War sites to Indigenous, maritime, agricultural, and cultural landmarks across Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s, and southern Prince George’s counties. Visitors can pick up or create a booklet and collect unique site stamps as a personal record of their journey through Southern Maryland’s rich heritage.

The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved $8.9 million in state grants for recreational improvements and land conservation in Baltimore City and six surrounding counties, supporting parks, trails, playgrounds, and natural areas. In Baltimore City, more than $7.5 million will go toward upgrades at City Spring Park, the restoration of Patterson Park lake, the Howard Rawlings Conservatory, walking paths, courts, and community garden spaces. The funding is part of the state’s broader commitment to Program Open Space and land conservation efforts, which balance outdoor recreation and green space protection across Maryland.

Did you hear?
Maryland has permanently preserved 19 additional working farms, protecting about 1,674 acres of prime agricultural land across multiple counties, including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, Washington, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Charles, and Worcester. These new agricultural preservation easements will safeguard farmland and woodland indefinitely, support local food production, and strengthen rural communities. The effort is part of the state’s broader conservation goals under the "Maryland the Beautiful Act", building on progress toward protecting 30% of state land by 2030 and advancing future targets.

The historic Ellicott City Jail, built in 1851 and expanded in 1878, is poised for a major preservation and renovation effort after standing vacant since the 1980s. Once a county jail with a complex past—including the imprisonment of enslaved people who had escaped—the landmark will be transformed through a partnership between Preservation Maryland and the University of Maryland.

The project aims to create a public and nonprofit space that includes community meeting areas, research offices for UMD faculty and students, historical exhibits acknowledging the site’s past, green space for reflection, and the future headquarters for Preservation Maryland. Funding for the rehabilitation comes from multiple public and philanthropic sources, and construction is expected to begin in spring 2026.
