Honoring BPD Officer Calvin M. Rodwell….
Today, September 22, we pause to honor the life, service, and legacy of Baltimore Police Officer Calvin M. Rodwell, affectionately known as “Officer Friendly,” who transitioned on September 22, 1973.
On behalf of the Rodwell/Stinnett family, we honor our hero.
Officer Rodwell dedicated his life to his family, the Baltimore Police Department, his community, and—most importantly—the youth he served and inspired. His badge represented more than law enforcement; it represented trust, service, protection, mentorship, and a commitment to helping young people see a better future.
Fifty-three years later, his legacy continues to speak.
Knowing that there is a school in Maryland’s 41st Legislative District that carries Officer Rodwell’s name and honors his legacy is deeply personal and profoundly special to our family. It ensures that generations of young people will continue to learn about a man who believed in serving his community and investing in its children.
As the Rodwell/Stinnett family, we accept the responsibility of keeping his legacy alive—not simply by remembering his name, but by living out the values he represented: service, sacrifice, mentorship, community, and a commitment to our youth.
Officer Friendly may have transitioned on September 22, 1973, but his service did not end. His legacy lives on through every young person we encourage, every family we support, and every community we serve.
We remember. We honor. We serve. We carry his legacy forward.
Rest in honor, Officer Friendly. Your family has not forgotten you, Baltimore has not forgotten you, and your legacy will never be forgotten.
