CHILDREN OF THE DIASPORA
A pop-up group show centering Filipino-American Identity, migration, and longing for our homeland. Specially featuring artwork by Baltimore Based, Filipino-American artist and organizer Christina Pasion.

Christina was arrested on July 30th alongside indigenous organizer Binay Serrano by elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) while seeking medical treatment. 1 month later, they are still detained. The AFP and the PNP have been engaged in a months-long red-tagging campaign against Christina, a practice that puts her in grave danger as it makes her a target for further harassment, disappearances, and even assassination.

“She ultimately chose to travel to the Philippines to volunteer with marginalized communities because she was so moved by the plight of migrant workers and understood that to truly understand and solve this, the answers are in the Philippines itself,” says Jom Dolor, chairperson of Bayan USA.

Through our depiction of our migration stories and our identities as Filipinos in the diaspora, we examine the forces that make us migrate in the first place and come to a better understanding as to why activists like Christina go back home. We also examine the role of artists in connecting with the experiences and struggles of everyday people and advancing towards a future Philippines that is grounded in just and lasting peace.

🔊 Become a member this Sunday!
Join our new member orientation on Sunday August 16th from 6:00-8:00pm here in Baltimore.

‼️ Right now, agreements like Pax Silica are displacing indigenous communities and destroying the land for the sole benefit of the U.S., Israel, other countries and foreign conglomerates. These create the conditions that tears families apart and drive thousands to leave the country every day.

☀️The struggle for a free and independent Philippines starts with understanding the status quo and the mechanisms that prevent us from speaking truth to power and helping the most neglected and oppressed.
The new member orientation will go into the history of Malaya, what’s happening back home, and how we can work together to defend and advance human rights, democracy, and sovereignty in the Philippines!

📩 If you’re interested in particupating, DM us for our address, or if you have any questions!

‼️COMMUNITY RALLY: AUGUST 6TH 5:30PM @ McKELDIN PLAZA
🗣️RELEASE CHRISTINA PASION! RELEASE BINAY SERRANO!

Christina Pasion is a Filipino-American community organizer based in Baltimore. Military and police forces raided the home where she and indigenous rights activist Binay Serrano were staying in the province of Laguna. Christina went to the Philippines to live with and provide community outreach to peasants and farmers. But for several months, the NTF-ELCAC have red-tagged her and falsely affiliated her with the NPA. This is a clear and present danger given that activists have been abducted and assassinated after being red-tagged. Due to the NTF-ELCAC’s whole-of-nation approach, Christina’s safety is not assured by the Bureau of Immigration.

Christine and Binay must be released and Christine must be allowed her safe and immediate return to her wife, family, and cats. The vilification of Filipino-American activists returning to the Philippines must end as it is only natural for people to follow their heart and their conscience to go serve the most vulnerable and exploited. The deaths of two U.S. citizens, Kai Sorem and Lyle Prijoles, expose the dangers of having a highly-militarized society be allowed to run roughshod among peasant and farmer communities.

🛳️ According to PH Ambassador Romualdez, he believes that Filipinos have not been targets by the US government.
Yet over 200 Filipino cruise workers have been deported from ports around the country. Jobless, no visas, barred from working in the US and blacklisted from working elsewhere in the world.

For Filipino seafarers, it feels like the world crashing down on them and their family. So where is the Philippine Consulate and what have they been doing?

The Consulate have sat on the sidelines for too long. As Tanggol Migrante Movement DMV, we demand the Consulate finally take action and visit the ports to investigate CBP and hear firsthand from the very seafarers they are in charge of protecting. We demand transparency, swift action, and due compensation for the hundreds of Filipino seafarers affected. For if the Consulate really aims to serve the Filipino people, they will do the right thing and make act now.

✍️ If you are a Filipino organization concerned about the lack of action by the Philippine Consulate, go to tinyurl.com/CommunitySignOnDMV and endorse our letter of demands to the Philippine Consulate.
✍️ If you’re a concerned individual and want to help, go visit tinyurl.com/helpseafarers to demand Carnival Cruise Lines show initiative in advocating for their employees
