Native American Humane Society

Native American Humane Society Nonprofit organized by tribal members to empower Tribes to build healthier communities through humane, sustainable animal care and control programs.

NAHS is a non-profit organization led by Natives for Natives to assist Tribes in creating their own culturally authentic animal welfare systems. By empowering Tribal leaders and families to develop their own solutions for animal welfare, we can create meaningful, systemic change. Addressing animal welfare goes beyond caring for animals; it’s a pathway to strengthening Tribal Nations, tackling complex issues, and fostering a healthier future for all Native people.

Our first-ever PetSmart Tribal Incubator meeting was a huge success!✨

We’re so grateful to the incredible Tribal members and leaders of the Little Band of Pomo Indians of Redwood Valley Rancheria for welcoming us and sharing their voices. This day was all about community— coming together to identify priorities for companion animal wellness, led by the people who know their needs best🐾

📚Stories are a powerful way to teach compassion!📚

We’re kicking off 2026 by expanding our humane education curriculum for Native kids (H.O.T. Dogs) through children’s books about dogs, cats, and kindness.

Thanks to the generosity of Brooklyn Book Bodega, we received two dozen books over the holidays and were honored to pass them along to our young Pomo friends at Kashia Elementary School on the Stewarts Point Rancheria, in the redwoods of Sonoma County.

Swipe through to see a few titles that stood out- each one helping kids learn empathy, respect, and how our actions matter to animals.

💛 Want to help? We are always accepting children’s book donations about dogs, cats, and other furry relations to share with our Tribal partners. Details on how to donate are on the final slide.

One week ago, Serena’s dog, Juniper, celebrated his Gotcha Day anniversary, and we wanted to take a moment to honor his journey and how far this rez dog has come!🤍

Serena adopted Juniper when he was about 6 months old, after first meeting him in December 2024, when he was being cared for by a friend of NAHS in an outdoor kennel. At the time, Juniper was recovering from mange and a severe case of worms. His fur was patchy, his belly was extended, and although he was still a puppy, you could clearly see how underweight he was.

In January 2025, Juniper weighed just 23 pounds and was beginning his recovery. With consistent care, proper nutrition, and lots of love, Juniper has completely transformed. As of July 2025, he weighs 55 pounds and is now healthy, strong, and thriving.

Since being adopted, Juniper has lived a life full of adventure. He and Serena have visited 8 National Parks and 1 National Seashore together: Arches, Canyonlands, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Sand Dunes, Gateway Arch, Great Smoky Mountains, Sequoia, Saguaro, and Point Reyes National Seashore.

Juniper’s story is a reminder of the resilience of rez dogs and the impact that compassion can have. Happy belated Gotcha Day anniversary, Juniper! Here’s to many more years of love and adventures ahead.❤️🐾
