Hi! While the order was for 41 trees including 11 Carolina Silverbells that we did not receive and some substitutions were made to the order, we managed to plant 30 trees at the Rogers Avenue area and near the Enslow baseball field.
It was a productive day with its share of drama. An auger called a Dingo turned over on the slopes next to the baseball field. No one was hurt and the City Forestry folks were able to send a logging truck with a crane to right the Dingo. The Division Street Landscaping crew who was doing the augering pitched in to help dig holes for the remaining trees on the slope.
Ted Martello, Fred Chalfant, Matthew Rescott, and Charles Murphy were on hand from Tree Baltimore and City Forestry to drop off the trees, lead Treekeeper training sessions and supervise the planting. They had one training session each for two groups of volunteers and the trees were their practice.
Ellen O'Brien and Jill Yesko -- Mt. Washington Treekeeper alumni -- were also on hand to lend a hand and advice. Wendy Olsson, Jeff Call and Dana Valery came by to help out as well. The Treekeeper trainees included Lisa Kopf, Stafford Oliver, Sam Zeidman and others from all over the City (from South Baltimore to North Harford Road).
Thanks to everyone who was able to come out and support the effort. If you were there and I missed you, please let me know.
A special thanks to Ellen O'Brien for her initiative and help in planning (Miss Utility, Division Street Landscaping, and Tool Bank tools pickup and drop off to name some of the activities) and pulling this off. Thanks also to her son, Patrick, who pitched in for both sessions.
If you missed coming out on Saturday to plant the trees, we will need help with watering and caring for the trees that were planted. We will be watching the trees closely to help them through the Cicada surge and a hot summer. If you can help with any of these activities let me know.
