New Laws Bring Hope for Michigan's Most Vulnerable Animals

We're excited to announce that Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed two important pieces of animal welfare legislation that will make a lasting impact across our state.

Michigan's first-ever Pet-Friendly spay/neuter license plate (SB 106) is now law! Proceeds from the specialty plate will help fund spay/neuter services, helping to reduce pet overpopulation while providing training and support for Michigan's animal shelters and rescues.

SB 293 & SB 294, the Bond or Forfeiture bills, are also now law. These bills help ensure that animals involved in cruelty and neglect cases receive the care they need while legal cases move through the courts, preventing them from languishing in shelters for months, or even years, to the detriment of the animal's wellbeing.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Dayna Polehanki for championing these important bills and tirelessly advocating for stronger protections for Michigan's animals. We also want to thank Governor Gretchen Whitmer for signing these measures into law and demonstrating her commitment to animal welfare.

Rocco, an African Grey parrot, was taken in by the National Animal Welfare Trust’s Berkshire center in 2018 after being found as a stray.

Because he caused trouble in the office by swearing and throwing his water bowl, staff member Marion Wischnewski took him home. There, Rocco became fascinated with her Amazon Alexa device, using it to play music and add items such as strawberries, watermelon, raisins, broccoli, and ice cream to the shopping list.

Wischnewski said she regularly has to check her shopping list and cancel the items he has added.
