This week was my last week. Over the last couple of weeks we have been hoop netting for catfish on the saint croix river to compare catch numbers to a couple of years ago. We also had are last stream shocking sight this week. Overall this experience has been insightful and a great learning experience this summer and I want to thank everyone who made this possible!

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been sampling different varieties of stream and tributaries. This is telling us how well the trout are doing and how well the natural reproduction was this year. We just finished up with with the Wilson and Gilbert creek and all of their tributaries. These sites are done every couple of years so we need to make sure there was not a dramatic decline in the population or if there was increase. Now we are going to to yearly sites to see if there was any increase or decrease in population and and habitat from the year before. This goes towards management and regulation so these fish populations will remain for generations to come!

Not much sampling last week as the water was up on the river. This week we were able to start sampling some trout and get some ibi data for stream health as well. This tells us how well the stream is doing health wise with some specific species showing up in the survey. The trout samples also tell us about size structure and if one species is dominant over another. We can also get as estimate of trout per mile.We are also getting closer to finishing the sturgeon sample. We just hopefully can have good water levels for next week to finish and move on to specific trout 🤞

An exciting sampling week! We were going for mostly sturgeon with a couple of muskies mixed in. We used multiple sampling techniques which included dip netting, back pack shocking, and even a little hook and line. Once the fish were caught, we measured them, took a weight, and then tagged them with pit tags and floy tags. This helps keep track of where the fish has traveled or how much the fish has grown if it were to be recaptured. Even though the water was quite high this week, there was success and hopefully it keeps going down for next week for more sampling!

First week in the books! This week we were planning on catching sturgeon and tagging them, but the weather played a role and we were unable to participate in such task. Since we couldn’t do sturgeon we had to make sure the correct signs were up on the conservation land easements so the public is able to walk on the land of streams without trespassing. Along with that, we had to record the weights, lengths, and collect the otoliths(ear bones) out of sample fish. This is so they can be aged in the winter. I also was able to put some rods together this week for a couple of upcoming events for the youth to fish. Although it was less sampling this week, it was very cool to experience some of the things an LTE would do every day! Hopefully the water will recede next week so we can tag some sturgeon!
